True, but you've got to think mate, it's not too much a burden on finances, if we find another pinnock or Roberts, we've more than made a profit even if the next 10 from non league are dross. Jack Shepherd came from very low down and hes been doing brilliant considering. I see no issues in it as long as we continue to look in other places too
I think it is worth a punt with non league players so long as its not costing us a fortune, and i am pretty confident we will not pay out much on these punts. I would like to see us have a crack at signing one or 2 players from OZ again. Adelaide Utd sold a young lad called Nestory Irankunda to Bayern, but of course he cant get close to the first team, he has just been loaned to Grasshopper Zurich, but he would have been awesome for us, lightning quick and a bullet shot. Be nice to look at loans like that.
I don't have any issue with us bringing in this type of signing, as long as its not seen as the answer with all hopes pinned on it working out. Hopefully it's not plan A
Your 1st line is right but I would add if we do this too much we end up with 5 punts costing the same as 2 experienced loans. Right now we've brought in one freebie at left wing back as a punt. I'd think our priority now is someone up front with experience, it may cost us as a loan player but if we shipped some this window it could be the difference this season.
Whilst I'm not suggesting we should sign this lad (as I know nothing about him) the top scorer still currently in League 1 now that Barry has gone back to Villa, is Richard Kone at Wycombe. He was signed from a team in the Sussex County Senior League, which is 2 levels BELOW where Curzon Ashton play. There's definitely players down the leagues that are playing at a much lower level than they should be.
The problem with players from Asia/Australia/anywhere overseas is the visa requirements. IIRC they need to be playing in a top league or have international appearances for it to be straightforward. From UK and Ireland, that is unnecessary.
I think money is always available on the right deal. In the summer we had the same "we've no money" on social media but then proceeded to spend over a million pounds on our targets.
I hear you about not having too many punts, and i would prefer quality over quantity, but i am not sure we have funds for players that would vastly improve us at the moment, even in the loan market. I also think we need the CB area improving before a striker, we are in the top 4 highest scorers in league 1 but are in the bottom half for goals conceded. Although i wouldnt say no to a striker. Its good to see Roberts back, and i actually like Earl but Pines, MDG and McCarthy can be a little dodgy at times, so tighten up at the back and i think we can easily get a play off spot.
Getting quality players in at bargain prices is never an easy thing wherever the player comes from, i think the club needs to look in as many places as possible. And my thing with the Aussie players is just that i see them because i live here and think wow would be nice to see this or that player in a Barnsley shirt. By the way the young lad i mentioned is an Australian International with 5 appearances
Watched a bit of a a game the other day and one team ,can't remember which one, had a 17 year old centre back who looked useful.
Hey hey, calm down Frogger. I wasn't having a dig at us signing Non league players lol. My criticism was actually at how many players do we just not give a fair chance to ?. Regardless of who they are and where we signed them from etc.
I'm calm mate if it came across differently i apologise. I do agree sometimes it feels we don't give players proper chances, I get why at times when they're young or from non league because I'm sure managers are feeling immense pressure , ultimately though if we are not prepared to give them any chances there's no point signing them
