RE: I remember the original Barnsley bitter too. brewed in Taddy, get a life man, Barnsley Bitter could only ever be brewed at Oakwell, its the water you know
bottom of Warren quarry lane? I remember the building but not the beer as I am too young for that. A few pubs in town still had Clarksons engraved windows in the eighties.
aye at the junction with warren quarry lane. Dunno if it was still open but I do remember the building from the 70's. When did it close?
My mistake, I'd thought they'd transferred production to Taddy for the last few years, soz. At least they're going to close John's down now, at last!
So far A bottle of Adnam's Explorer followed by a bottle of Wychwood Wychcraft, bottle of Badger England's Gold. Fursty Ferrt & Innis & Guin Oak Aged Beer. I might have a couple of drams of Aberlour to finish the night off.
That last beer was only a 330ml bottle But easily the best of them all. Having a dram or 2 on the off chance that something interesting gets said in the next hour or so before I go to bed.
Agree Has a really pungent smell as well. I remember once just whiffing it outside the Wig & Pen in Sheffield and puking up! Eee them were the days!
Darleys They used to serve it in the Vic at Hemsworth where many turned to snakebites to dull the vile taste. Also in Hemsworth at the George and Dragon, Wilsons was an aquired taste and too strong for young lads like us just starting out drinking (circa 1982). Looking back Hemsworth then was a top boozing place. Four Boozers on Crosshills selling Wilsons, Sams, Trophy (very sweet/sickly) and good old Tetleys handpull. Its no wonder so many Jocks live there. There were once 15 drinking places in what was then a village and it seems everyone had a different brew.
