That would have to be done by the owners of that block of properties. The council bought the Metropolitan Centre off the Pension fund, that owned it.
Other week I was in town and a group of people in suits etc with BMBC photo ID cards round their necks looked like they were examining and discussing the area above Boots etc .
It would be nice if that side of Cheapside was brightened up. The staff at Boots are desperate for Boots to invest in the store, it looks very tired and dated inside. Also the short street at the side of Boots that leads to Market St. Anyway, I think the town does look better, hopefully the people of the town will care for it.
They’ve just replaced all the signage on Boots so I’d be surprised if it’s on a list of potential closures. I know Walgreens (the US owner) suggested they may have to close a number of stores in the UK, but wonder if they’ve had a better year due to the pandemic. The fixtures and fittings in the one in town are very dated, and there’s no self checkouts either. Superdrug is taking the recently closed Clarks unit at Cortonwood so there’s clearly demand for them. I’m surprised we’ve still got M&S to be honest. Although it’s always busy when I go in, they’ve announced another round of closures and the smaller stores that sell clothing are most likely to go. Given the one in Huddersfield closed last time, you’d have to assume Barnsley has similar profit margins to that one. I suppose they could try and reconfigure it and move the food hall to the front, but wouldn’t be that shocked if they closed it.
The boots in town is an absolute disgrace. Both the outside and the inside it's just embarrassing. In fact it seems that it's all the traditional household names which are the worst in town. M&s just looks dated and run down, boots, Wilko, they're all companies who've just accepted poor quality fittings
River Island are taking a unit as well, lve not seen it anywhere in the news publications yet though.
I see that river island applied for permission to install signs past month. Judging by the location plan it will be a pretty big store about he size of flannels which, with the others who are due to open doesn't actually leave many empty units I don't think
River Island are taking 4 units, but the ones on that side aren’t quite as big as the Flannels side and one of the units will essentially be a stock room. You can still view the leasing plan here: https://theglassworksbarnsley.com/leasing/ River Island will be SU7 - SU10 Flannels is due to open in February.
I'm confused by this. Says Cineworld 13 screen cinema, but only shows a tiny place? Does the cineworld extend out underneath or above some of the other units? Same with the superbowl. Looks a tiny area EDIT: Ignore me. Just seen the button to show the first floor!
Still a fair old size though and more importantly gives the impression of occupancy. You wouldn't happen to know what cultural use mean on a few of the units would you?
SU13 is The Fragrance Shop and that opens on Friday. The others I’m not 100% certain, and I don’t want to confirm anything just yet as a number of units have been under offer then ended up becoming available again for various reasons. True Independent Group (the owners of Cucina Sky Lounge) have taken 3 bar/restaurant units and announced what these will be on their Facebook Page last week: https://www.facebook.com/onlyamazingvenues/
Oh yeah it’s a big store and will have Men’s, Women’s, and Kids. The cultural use units are the museums announced by the council a while back: https://www.barnsley.gov.uk/news/tr...et-for-barnsley-s-multi-million-pound-centre/
95% certain R3 or R5 will be a TGI Fridays. R2 is the recently announced Salt Rock bar and restaurant from the owners of Cucina.
