Couple of spots it’s easy to take a wrong turn. We did in Manchester near Stockport & also near Selby. We missed a sign where it was a bit overgrown. Also took a wrong turn in Hessle. You go through backstreets in Hull for a couple of miles. It’s rough. Really rough. It was a hot day & everyone was in their gardens as we went past. Wouldn’t want to go through on my own. As you’re doing it over 4 days you should be ok but there’s some serious hills between Manchester & Dunford Bridge. We hit them after about 8 hours on the bike & some of the lads even had to get off & walk up a few of them. The good news is there’s barely a hill after Dunford Bridge going east. A few small ones going over the M62 near Hull but that’s as bad as it gets. As long as your backsides are ok you’ll do the first & last 2 days comfortably. Brilliant experience, I’d recommend it to anyone. Just make sure you take your time deciding which way to go if you aren’t sure. Much easier to spend another minute or two making sure than doing what we did & going the wrong way a couple of times. It was a few years back so hopefully the signs where we got lost are easier to follow now.
I regularly do my fitness walks in that area starting at home in Monk Bretton. Down to Cudworth Bridge, along station lane and onto the old railway track. Part way down the track splits, RH side takes me to the end of the trail at Carr's Lane then on to viaduct. Taking LH track takes me down to the Edderthorpe Lane bridge where just prior to the bridge I turn right down a banking and over the river and on through the wood that leads back to the other side of the Viaduct.
It's easy to loose the trail around Hadfield / Padfield but just keep heading east and you'll eventually find the Longdenden Trail.
I did it from Barnsley to Glossop and back a few years ago. Thoroughly enjoyable ride except for the diversion off the tracks at Woodhead, the hills there are a bit fierce....
Barnsley to Selby is a big detour via Donny, but some great scenery. Be careful of the signs though, some helpful people have removed them or swapped them. Enjoy!
The trail is closed at Gypsy Marsh, Broomhill for the road works on the Dearne Valley Parkway. It's a short detour around it which is sign posted. Remember to slow down for Walkers and runners. Cyclists do not have priority on the Trail.
It's stunning. The TPT trail runs alongside it, sharp descent from the top and then at the Riverside it bears left to Sprotbrough and The Boat Inn.
Just ‘done’ Day 1; Southport - Altrincham. One of the best day’s cycling I’ve ever done. Loved the industrial and post industrial landscape and very surprised that 99% was off road. Liverpool loop was fantastic. Glorious warm weather as well. Was really looking forward to Day 2 Altrincham- Cudeth but I fear Frances is going to make it a pretty miserable day. No matter onwards and acrosswards or something like that.
When I designed my Wild Yorkshire Way walk I used the Trans Pennine Trail for the section from Wharncliffe Crags, passing Barnsley at Dodworth and following the trail all the way to North Ferriby to join the Yorkshire Wolds Way. I've walked that route twice, about 7 days walking, some nice pubs on the route, you'll enjoy it. www.wildyorkshireway.co.uk
Can only imagine the state of them paths over Woodhead after how much rain we’ve had. Fair play for getting it done
