RE: PS Some interesting points. I doubt there was a queue for investment when we got promoted and other than shirt sponsorship (where I believe we were tied into a contract with ORA) I can't see how much more revenue could have been generated. Agree totally about Hendries appointment...a wasted year in my opinion. Redfearn I'm not so sure, the money was decent and though we clearly missed him greatly it goes back to the argument about how you can keep players when they want to move on.
RE: Bassett... Not sure about that. As much as I disliked the style of football he was painfully close to getting us back to the Prem. I think he was probably the right man for the job at the time. We'd had a wasted year under Hendrie and were desperate for an experienced head to lead some talented players.
clearly not true They have spent may more years in the top flight, and I'm talking old First div not just since prem. 12 years ago they were going back to the prem, not having their first season there. So they were already one year plus parachutes better off. Yes they came down with us, but were soon back (whereas we dropped again) due largely to Big Sam! The point is we have never been the same size as Bolton, or even been in the same division as them for any length of time. I'm sure that pre 1995 they were also getting bigger crouds than us, keeping in mind we had about 3500 season tickets in our prom year. Had we stayed up, or even gone back up rather than falling again maybe we would be in their position now, but we didn't. We are where we are due to poor manager choices, poor player choices, not to mention financial problems. And history does not put us on a par, regardless of how many facts you ignore.
*sigh* From 1982 to 1993 - the years immediately prior to the time I'm talking about they were in the bottom two divisions. They were in the top flight for just one season between 1964 and 1995. I accept that they spent alot of time at the top just pre and just post the second world war, but I don't see how you think that's relevant? Or are we saying that Notts County and ******* Royal Engineers are bigger clubs than us as well?
And while I'm at it, here's the comparative average attendances leading up to their promotion: 1980-81 Bolton 9,843 Barnsley 12,800 1981-82 Bolton 7,597 Barnsley 15,098 1982-83 Bolton 7,552 Barnsley 12,341 1983-84 Bolton 5,892 Barnsley 9,738 1984-85 Bolton 4,951 Barnsley 7,225 1985-86 Bolton 4,847 Barnsley 6,067 1986-87 Bolton 4,851 Barnsley 5,870 1987-88 Bolton 5,018 Barnsley 7,683 1988-89 Bolton 5,528 Barnsley 7,224 1990-91 Bolton 7,292 Barnsley 9,017 1991-92 Bolton 7,281 Barnsley 7,506 1992-93 Bolton 6,030 Barnsley 6,417 1993-94 Bolton 10,411 Barnsley 7,552 1994-95 Bolton 13,029 (they were promoted) Barnsley 6,526 But, you know, you carry on looking up at the big misters.
