How’s that work? Whiteman is for sale at a similar price, and isn’t proven - it’s a like for like swap, surely keeping the captain is worth ££££s?
We never sign proven championship players and we won't if mowatt leaves. Whitemans a good player too good for league one, I'd love to keep mowatt but it look like he minght be off and in the current climate I think we will take 1million for him rather than lose him for nothing in 6 months.
I think he would have signed a new contract by now if he was going to. Bur the closer we get to the the end of the Jan transfer window the more I think we should cash in on him rather than him leave for free in the summer. If he wants to leave for a bigger pay packet then so be it. Wish he would resign but can't see it now.
I appreciate that our usual business model is to sell players on and replace with hopefully suitable cheap replacements. But this isn’t that; we’re not selling Mowatt for £4m and replacing him with a sub £1m player that gives us £3m to balance the books. This is selling our captain for £1.2m and replacing him with a L1 player costing >£1.2m
And relegation would cost us £6-7M? Probably not likely, even without Mowatt but why take a chance when a season is going well?
Totally agree, the worse scenario is we take a million for him 2 days before then end of the transfer window. Sell him now and get a replacement or use the money for a left wing back so styles can play through the middle. If he was going to sign a contract I’m sure he’d have done it by now.
Why is everyone thinking we are going to sign Whiteman to replace Mowatt if he leaves? I know we have expressed an interest, but so have other teams in the Championship, and those teams have also submitted bids. I expect Whiteman to have signed for someone else by the time that any decision on Mowatt’s future is confirmed. I am hoping that Mowatt will stay, but in my opinion, and it is just that, we have players who can step into that role should he go.
I don't think it would , think back to start of season we would have all been glad to finish above relegation , we have already exceeded expectations. Gotta ask does mowatt want to stay ? If not why not cash in on him while we can . I like probably most in here slated the board and some of there decisions but I think we've bought some really good players in the last 6 MTHS . I personally think Herbie will be a better player than mowatt I can see alot of potential in him and I believe he will be our next center mid . I'm not massive fan of mowatts , yeah he puts a shift in but so does everyone else , he just hasn't got that vision what ya need in that role to just spray balls around the park . My opinion . Fire away
Agree about Whiteman. Doncaster are turning down bids from multiple clubs now. No chance we will meet their valuation. But while we have players that can step in, I don't think they are as good as Mowatt yet. We would go from a midfield of Mowatt and James to a midfield of 20-22 year olds. We saw the potential impact of losing two players from the same position and putting young players in there when we sold Pinnock and Lindsay at the same time. I think if Mowatt goes, as well as James, then we'll finish bottom 6. Could also impact our ability to keep hold of the likes of Styles for any length of time, as we drop out of the mid table bunch of clubs, into the bottom third. Not sure £1m is adequate compensation for that. Not sure there's much potential for a sell on % value either.
I'm with Doug O'Kane on this one and presumably it is the club which has knocked back the rumour. I would love Mowatt to sign a contract extension, however, short, or long, but can't see us letting him go without demanding the price we want. It is worth bluffing the £4/5 million just to keep him for at least the rest of the season. His agent seems to be respected by the club, so I wonder who has started this rumour. Ismael seems to be more forceful and decisive in his choices and he clearly wants to keep Mowatt and, for once, I think that a BFC manager will get his way. Interesting that there seems to be little indication as to who are the two clubs rumoured to be interested. I can understand someone thinking Millwall, because he scored such a cracker against them, so the same person will presumably start a rumour that Watford must be the other!! On the other hand, if we were to land Ben Whiteman for £2 million against something like £4 million plus for Mowatt, I might be persuaded that a reasonable deal had been done, but I feel sure that Whiteman will go to somewhere like Preston, if he does leave, and that deal will depend on Pearson leaving PNE. Clubs are so wary about committing cash in the current circumstances that the most likely scenario is that Mowatt stays at BFC, Pearson stays at PNE and Whiteman stays at Doncaster Rovers and we are all happy, especially Ismael, who has got the squad he wanted from this window.
Understandable if we sell considering we're looking at potentially 18 months without fans in the ground. If he does go then the priority for me needs to be a LWB, freeing Styles to go into his natural position and unlock his true potential.
echo what most people have said. in the current climate, £1m+ for a player with <6 months on contract is fair business
Our business model is to sign young players who we think are good enough for this level or have the potential to be whiteman fits that. We would have never got 4 million for mowatt, with 6 months left we will be lucky to get 1million. Like you say football is a business and we haven't had fans for near on 12 months and no one knows when they will be back. We paid 500k for mowatt Our options are cash in on a player who wants to leave and re invest or he leaves for nothing. I'd cash in you wouldn't simple as that.
I agree on some of your points, but I think we did not have enough quality cover when we lost Pinnock and Lindsay at the same time. With regards to our current midfield options, I think we have strength in depth and whilst I would not want to lose Mowatt I think we would be ok. I understand the nervousness about losing Mowatt but I am not convinced it would see our slide down the league.
With respect that this the same argument used by Sheffield United to justify the sale of James Beattie back in 2009 when they looked certs for an automatic promotion back to the premiership. In the event they missed out on an automatic spot, lost in the playoff final and Beattie never did break his leg.
