absolutely the opposite..................

it is the sign of a good manager that he

    a) gets the best out of limited resources given all the constraints-eg no money , transfer window etc

    b) doesn't slate his players in public

    Harrow.

Fair point, sorry for my hastiness.

Ok then, so what do we do. What do we, as a small town club do to solve our goalscoring crisis? Hmmm?

Listen here, listen to the overall tune. We are Barnsley F.C - the last time I checked, we weren't a big club. We weren't even medium sized, so get a grip on reality. We splashed out £1.2 million on Iain Hume and that, for us, was mega-bucks. Do you understand what £1.2 million does for a club like us? A helluva lot. We can't afford to go out and buy players for that amount of cash on a regular basis. So, we have to make do with what we have and right now, Odejayi and Macken are adequate players. Ok, so Odejayi can't finish a hot dinner, fair enough, but let me present to you, this:

Last night, we played a team currently residing 5th in the table. They are a good team. They beat Chelsea. They're 5th in the table on merit. We beat them 3-2 without play too well.

Q: Would you take that result every game, with Odejayi doing exactly what he did last night? Of course you would.

I'll agree, his finishing is woeful. But what can we do about it? Odejayi is not brilliant - he's not a magic man. But he is a man, and he's damn sure trying his hardest for this club. Until we reach the dizzy heights of superstardom and the money comes rolling in, you guys are just going to have to take your heads out of the clouds, and stop dreaming that we are a big club with brilliant players, when we quite simply, aren't.

What do you feel being negative towards people achieves? I'm really interested to find out.

No idea. Definitely not at work, though. Honest.

    He's an athlete.

He's fast, he's strong, he's powerful and he does put a lot of effort in. In full flight he looks poised, in chasing things down he looks hungry and menacing.

And then you put a ball at his feet, and he looks like Norman Wisdom.

He has all the attributes you want in a footballer apart from 'being good'.

    I think.................

he was badly advised at school-he surely would have made a better rugby player? We were debating last night what his best position is-we concluded it was substitute goalkeeper if Muller was injured

We're having two different conversations here

I cannot dispute that Odejayi is a BFC player, works hard, and that BFC is a club of limited resources.

You've got very carried away today making a great deal about Ode's worth to the team. Based primarily on the fact that he works hard and that currently BFC don't have many striking options. I'll agree with you.

But that doesn't take away from the fact that Kayode Odejayi has played 1 and a thrid seasons for BFC and scored 3 goals. He's not good enough at this level purely and simply based on that statistic. He can't shoot, but he's paid by BFC to play as a striker and score goals.

As for what we should do, we should sign a striker who has a proven track record of scoring in the English 1st or 2nd tier and send Chris Morgan the bill. We should teach Kayo and our other impotent strikers to score by working on the training ground. Or we should just close our eyes and hope for the best. But no amount of running about will make up for Odejayi's lack of goals in my eyes. Or any of the others for that matter. It just won't.

Oh and I don't class it as being negative

I don't set out to be negative. I am contributing towards a football forum and have an opinion.

Surely thats what all this is about? This place would be boring as **** if we all danced around and lauded every one of our players simply because we've won a match. There's more to football than that.

    If he can catch

He'd make an awesome wide receiver in American football.

    Agreed

Odejayi missed a sitter (the keeper didnt have to make a save in the end as odejayi hit it straight at him when he had time after the defender had fallen over) and his head went down straight away, made no further effort to get into the game and that is something we have seen all too often over the last two seasons.

I particularly liked how he completly avoided playing on the wing in the second half and instead stood as far away from the ball as was humanly possible.

Also another great myth that i've read today (none odejayi related) is that Colace is underrated by barnsley fans, I think that barnsley fans rate him VERY highly, or all the ones i speak to at games do anyway)

    Disagree

I don't think he is strong at all, maybe he is strong when chasing a ball (that he will inevitably put wide/high/straight at the keeper) but when he is in the box or in the air he has no strength at all and the slightest touch leaves him on the ground when a man of his size should be putting himself about and out muscling men half his size.

I'd agree that he does put a lot of effort in, for the first ten minutes anyway, until he does a big howler or something goes against him, then he does little else for the rest of the game which is exactly what happened yesterday.
