Only on the Emley side tbh. You can tell why they got promoted last year and gel as a unit. Which is an advantage over a chopping and changing u21s week in week out. We got outfought and out jumped from corners and freekicks. 2 of which produced goals. The other the lad ran from 40yds out to score. They also hit the woodwork twice. Bar and post.
Yeay! Eddie Loyden's hat trick when we came back from 0-2 down to beat the Blades 3-2 .....and promptly sold Loyden back to Chester. Then the 1-1 v the Blades again when Pete Graham got our goal and Alan Birchenall hit one of his howitzers from the half way line past Roy Ironside .....if only they had contact lenses in those days, Roy. Cracking games and really well attended. Oh, and I forgot the 3-0 v Rotherham United when both Barrie Thomas and Johnny Evans scored. Great nights and great atmosphere. Where did it all go?
As a lower league side at that time these games were a good chance to play our higher status neighbours - Wednesday, United and Rotherham were First and Second Division. In contrast to today’s habits and attitudes the bigger clubs were always willing to put out strong teams despite this “only” being The County Cup. There were some very enjoyable games in that competition to lift the gloom of the pre-Thomas/Evans 1960s.
