Unfortunately a survey carried out after the riot found that 45% of republican voters supported them and Trump. Given the numbers that is a hell of a lot of people. Something is seriously wrong with the Education system that people are unable (or deliberately choose not) to separate fact from obvious fiction and fake news ( aka 'lies') Comparing the whole sorry state, as some might, with the UK Brexit situation is not accurate. The main point is, whilst many campaigned for a reversal of the referendum decision, only a tiny minority of extremists are/were advocating the violent overthrow of a democratically elected Government to achieve that aim. Besides results of Trumps tenure as POTUS have played out and the results are there for all to see. The long term effects and impact of Brexit are still unknown and contentious with the country split on how they only think it will play out.
I appreciate lots of the BBS aren’t in their first flush of youth. But I have some thoughts on describing some people as a WUM. Y see in real life some of the greatest blokes I’ve ever met were WUM’s. Whilst at times they could be borderline annoying, often looking for the joke rather than holding a sensible conversation, they were warm and kind and charming. What we have here is a troll (an online only phenomenon). These things don’t exist to ‘wind up’, their only purpose is to disrupt, this interesting specimen is sat wan king into his sock at the attention he’s been getting. In real life trolls don’t exist, because face to face not a single person here would tolerate their conversations disrupted in this way. Wind up merchants can be funny, trolls are only funny to themselves. In hundreds of posts we’ve seen 1 spark of humanity, 1 genuinely funny line and no hint of humility. Everything else just a trudge of disruption and self aggrandisement.
Agree 100% Time we probably drew a line under this (I am as guilty as other on here who have taken the bait) Banning poster/ removing or locking thread goes against those who vehemently argue for Free Speech. To an extent I agree but the best way is simply for us all to show restraint and ignore posts clearly designed to inflame, provoke a reaction and that are not simply expressing an opinion but deliberately contradictory and argumentative with no attempt to move the debate forwards.
I appreciate the concern for my mental health but you will all soon come to realise that it really isn’t necessary. Contrary to the popular opinion, my intention has never been simply to wind up or troll people for the sake of it. Unfortunately, some people allow themselves to be wound up by anyone simply holding an alternate point of view (particularly where Politics and Donald Trump are concerned) and, frankly, anyone who comes at me acting like a dick can expect to be treated accordingly. What can I say.... I know I should rise above and not bite back but it’s just in my nature. Anyway.... I’m going to take a break from posting on here and antagonising people for now but I will be back in due course to see my task through to its conclusion. You won’t have a clue what I mean by that now but, trust me, It will soon become clear. When the dust settles I will hopefully be able to catch up with you all to talk about everything that has happened. I think we will probably need a whole new thread that will dwarf this one! Until then, I will be contactable by private message for anyone who might have any questions, but don’t expect a reply if you just want to be abusive. Buckle up folks. It’s going to be a very bumpy ride for some of you. Catch you later, Casual Tyke P.s. Up the Reds! I’m expecting a comfortable win over Tranmere today.
I think on my profile, my hobbies are still listed as bulls1tting & taking the piss. You can see a train when it’s coming..
Are you familiar with Popper's Tolerance Paradox? - If a society allows anyone to say or do what they want (is infinitely tolerant), it will eventually be taken over by the intolerant. Basically, to stay a tolerant society (or individual within that society), you must be intolerant of intolerance. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradox_of_tolerance
I keep seeing this nonsense about the insurrection act being circulated amongst right wing nutjobs. I'm assuming that's what our very own nutter keeps referring to. What they don't understand is that inauguration is a formality. The presidency automatically expires next Wednesday at noon, at which point Trump is no longer in charge. If Trump somehow stopped the inauguration happening, that doesn't in any way make him still the president. The term is a firm 4 years, which expires at noon.
One suggestion I've seen is that Trump could issue an executive order banning Facebook and Twitter within the USA before he leaves - purely out of spite. That would certainly set the cat amongst the pigeons.
Parler, the place the people banned off twitter migrated to, has been removed now from the App Store, Google Play and Amazon have suspended the web hosting, effectively killing the website. There's now a tirade against this for 'discriminating against conservatives'. What they fail to realise is that nobody has been banned for being a conservative, they've been banned for posting illegal content, or allowing illegal content on their platform unmoderated.
It is funny all those right-wing politicians holding press conferences with national and international media to complain about the loss of their free speech....
So its a good thing a small number of technological giants can essentially dictate what opinions you get to hear on social media?
Nobody is policing opinions. Just illegal content. There are plenty of people on social media with a huge range of opinions and views. That’s not going to change. Nobody wants that to change. When people use their platform to organise terrorist events, post about terrorist events or other illegal content, they should expect to lose their account.
If those opinions are intolerant (racist/sexist/etc), hate speech, threats of violence, peadophilia or otherwise offensive or illegal then yes, absolutely. I refer to the Popper's Tolerance Paradox above.
