I don't think they're anything political. I just think it's a personal viewpoint surely? If a couple of those went away in four years, and a couple of new ones came in from the Democrat side, I could easily switch.

Isn't there already a different federal minimum wage for tipped workers? Genuine question rather than a trick, by the way (because I wrote it out and it seemed like one).

Edit: So I was right I think - it looks like the federal minimum wage is $7.25, but $2.13 for tipped workers. Why would anybody who supports the concept in other countries be against at least increasing the former?

Not like that. At least I don't anyway. You'd normally reply to the person if you're going to talk about them?

Like a said slightly bizarre but made me laugh so all good.

Is there? I'm not sure. But what I watched was about the wage for everyone going up to $15 at a national level and one of the big discussions was the service industry. I'd like to think they're getting close to that already in California based on the taxes they have to pay and how expensive everything is already (hence people fleeing in their droves).

It wasn't one of the big policies over there but as I've got a personal interest in that stuff I left it on and listened in. Was another reminder of how crazy the tipping culture is, in a good way, and how much they value really good service in a way we just take it for granted.

I remember now that you’ve had a bee in your bonnet about this before. No, I wouldn’t reply to you because I wasn’t talking to you, I was talking to the person I replied to which is why I replied to them. Why would I reply to you saying it’s funny that Loko said that isn’t it X*? That would be bizarre. You must spend a lot of your time laughing because people reply to people and reference others without also replying to them all the time.

*I can’t remember who it was I was talking to now.

Well yes, all those viewpoints are political as are those for defunding the police, having a minimum wage etc.
It's just easier now to see where your defence of Trump stems from.

Sorry, I've been researching it so it's in the edit!

Yeah, federal minimum wage is $7.25, but tipped workers are already exempt so get $2.13 as long as the tips make up the difference. No reason at all that I can see why you couldn't double the $7.25 and keep the exemption. That would also help the likes of fast food workers, who seem to be excluded from the conversation every time hospitality is brought up!

Well I think we begin to get the picture here. Biden has not supported any move to defund the Police and nor will he. TBH I ran out of patience with your statements after that.

Against lockdown? Seriously dude? Have you comprehended the Covid death figures in the States? I don't know why you'd support some of this stuff, but being a mealy-mouthed apologist for a divisive, racist, misogynistic disrupter is not a good look in my humble opinion. You, of course are entitled to your's.

That would make a lot of sense. Without the tips you'd get a lot of people turning away from hospitality and then you'd be in a cycle of poor service, closed restaurants, etc. and where do those people turning away from it go?

A few buddies of mine used to make an absolute fortune bartending in New York, Denver and Chicago. You literally average $1 a drink as the minimum so you're easily walking away with $250 most nights.

I think the deference towards the police in America is dangerous. There seems to be a bit of an entrenched belief that police are right and heroes just because they are police. It seems very very difficult for them to be convicted even following gross misconduct/murder (see Daniel Shaver, Philando Castile etc)

Okay. And the care givers, childcare workers, retail workers, cleaning and janitorial jobs that are also on minimum wage and don’t get tips?

Biden struggled to get the words out to categorically state he was against defunding the police. Considering it was a 95% Democratic motion there's no way he was against it.

I had this discussion yesterday but deaths in the US as a percentage of population are less than Italy, Spain, France, Belgium and the UK. That's without removing the ridiculous handling of Covid by Cuomo that had New York at 20,000 deaths before Covid had even taken off. There's also way more challenges to the way they record Covid deaths in the US, similar to what we've seen here, so that number isn't 100% accurate anyway. It isn't a good response, only a small handful of countries have managed a good response, but please don't call me a meathly-mouthed apologist or try and criticise me for thinking that lockdowns aren't the saviour of the world as a solution to this pandemic.

Possibly. But I think what a lot of people often forget is that the US is bloody huge. One side of the country to the other is a three hour time difference which is mental, and you wouldn't think that the West Coast, East Coast, mid-West, and the South belonged to the same country at all at times.

I don't see the entrenched belief personally, but I'm sure it's there. I do think they're protected when it comes to misconduct, but I also think (or would like to) that there's half a million good cops in the US that are there protecting people. I have the same respect for the police here, but even then you'll see the ones at the game who don't handle things well at all.

I said service industry as that was what I was talking about and the examples I gave based on my understanding that it was a blanket increase on minimum wage. I never said anything about not giving minimum wage to the people you're referencing.

This is relentless when it doesn't need to be.

Trump struggled to get the words out to categorically state he was against white nationalism or the QAnon conspiracy. They're both obviously trying to keep their fringes on board - it's nothing to do with what they actually believe. But even if we're forced to conclude (for the sake of argument) that they passionately believe everything that they haven't categorically denied then Biden comes across as a hell of a lot better than Trump.

But how does it? Sorry Helen but that feels like a very short sighted way to look at things.

Thinking the police shouldn't be defunded isn't political as a viewpoint. That's just my view and opinion, and I'm sure that of many others on here. If a political party happens to then also agree with that it doesn't automatically make my views political.

I was just challenging your statement that said you were against minimum wage but then in your example you only focussed on the one industry that benefits from it (via tips) and ignored all the other industries.

I specifically used the service industry when someone asked me why I was against it. At no point did I say I was against minimum wage increasing for industries outside the service industry. That would be mean, and I work for a Real Living Wage employer so believe me I'm on board and supportive on that front.

Everything is political. Funding/defunding of the police are both political viewpoints.

Was Biden for or against defunding the Police? Sometimes you have to let the truth in. Anything else is mealy-mouthed in my opinion.
