wow massive country like the USA win medals like they expect to and little old us manage it and we get more coverage on our own station ...go figure
I'm afraid you're making a fool of yourself fella. Others have stated the reasons why and are all correct.
To be fair its the same over in the US, no talk of Britains Gold day either, its all pro US and thats it.
Because they are a bigger country? Athletics is a bigger sports here and with the lottery money I bet our athletes get more funding as well.
But the college system in the US is geared up to channel anyone who shows any aptitude in whatever sport. They are the only major country apparently who don't receive any government funding into their olympic programme. But the way sports scholarships work over there benefits them enormously, the facilities at universities are incredible. But back to the original poster. The BBC celebrated the 3 golds because they are the British broadcaster and they are British athletes, however they also did give credit to the US for winning those 3 golds. But understandable it wasn't the same level. I didn't feel that the BBC did make out that "shock waves were sent around the world", just about the feel good factor it had brought in the UK and I agree, for me Saturday evening ranked up there as one of the best sporting moments, you could sense the buzz out and about. It was being proud of your country, patriotism, not jingoism. This is my wife's 2nd Olympics in this country. 4 years ago it was strange for her, she'd never really thought about it but then whilst watching she realised the difference in coverage, the focus on British athletes, people she'd never heard of but has come to like and respect and root for - she loves Rebecca Adlington and Jessica Ennis to name 2. This time it's even stranger because she's unfamiliar now with many of the US athletes.....she's rooting for both countries and takes equal joy if its a Brit or an American who wins, in many cases if it's a head to head between the 2 for the gold she's happy for Britain to win it. All countries will focus on their athletes, it's what gets them the viewers...last week we were in Bruges, saw plenty of coverage of Belgium athletes, I didn't have a problem with that.
