Opportunity to take points off them. A play off position will take some ballsing up. Not that we’re not capable..
We're very good at winning football matches. We've had lots of teams over the years that have played some really nice stuff but were pretty hopeless at winning games. This team often look average but the results aren't, and their ability to hold on to a lead is unsurpassed in my time watching Barnsley. All the more impressive after how disjointed we looked last season. And that we had to sell to survive, recruiting predominantly free transfers and loans. And without wishing to discredit Cole and Norwood, who have both given us all they've got, I can't imagine any other team would be in the play-offs with our strike force, particularly when we've had no alternative to those two for most games. It helps that the ball comes off Phillips' boot faster than a speeding bullet.
Our game management isn't always pretty, but it's incredibly effective. I'd been out this evening, arrived home with 20 minutes left. Switched the match on and saw exactly what I expected - a very scrappy match with us making minimal effort to score but also making sure that Vale were completely stifled in the final 3rd of the field. We were never, ever going to not win that match after going 3-1 up. On a side issue, does anyone know why their pitch was so awful? I haven't seen anything like that at professional level for a long while.
Checked L1 player stats earlier. Not a single player in top 20 goalscorer list. Only Connell in assists with 5. This is a machine of a team that's better than the sum of its parts. Duff is a magician of a manager. Hecky's & Stendel's sides had players miles better than he has at his disposal and he's transformed us within 9 months. Best manager since Wilson. Said it before, say it again.
Can’t argue with that. We’re hardly low scorers, goals spread through the team. Our back 4 must have 10 between them.? Makes you wonder where we’d be, if the strikers really did find their boots..?
Interesting that many thought Harrison was onside at the end, I thought he looked well off, and there wasn’t much complaint to be fair. Although in the interest of balance I thought Liam was off for our second goal.
Absolutely. With John Motson proceeding to have a mini orgasm as the penalty spot is repainted mid-match.
Kitching was definitely on - I would need to watch it again to see if Russell was off though he did jump for the ball I genuinely have no idea if that counts these days if he missed it . Need to watch their disallowed goal back but I thought on a quick viewing at the time he was just off
Great posts, great points of view, were still not sure who should an who shunt be playing, i have my opinion on Cole, 5hite, and i have my opinion on Kane, one of our better players, others agree an others disagree, thats why im thankfull weve got Duff, he sees them on a daily basis, knows what he's doing and i have faith in him, he's a wan ker when we loose an thats all part of being a fan Great win, great 3 points, great game of football, bitterly cold and the pitch, was well Bridlington play in the 10th tier and that was like Wembley compared to last neight. C,O,Y,R,
We are the lowest scorers in the top six though. The strikers may be able to take some credit for the amount of space our midfielders get, with the work they put in to give opposition defence a hard time, but Cole in particular has been guilty of some bad misses. He seems to struggle to finish chances when he has time to think about it, but does ok when it is more of an instinctive finish. His dad was the same when he first moved to United (albeit, clearly at a much much higher level!)
