you realise that the difference between85% and 100% in small hospitals in terms of numbers is tiny. This is the problem Wales has. GM and Liverpool are both near capacity. We have a virus with and R rate above 1. This means that if you don’t do something about it ICUs will reach capacity and very quickly. I know it isn’t what you want to hear. Me either tbf but as the kids say it is what it is
I, for one, am shocked that the increase of cases 2 weeks ago has led to an increase in hospital admissions and ICU capacity issues. Who could have possibly seen that coming. Glad we did something about it at the time, so it doesn’t continue to happen.
Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board (North & Mid Wales) has 3 hospitals with critical care facilities - Bangor, Rhyl and Wrexham. For a population of ~700000. Between them, they will have maybe 4-50 ICUs beds - and many are a significant distance from home & family/friends. It won't take much for those to be full - which then has a knock-on effect for anyone having the misfortune to have a heart attack, stroke or serious car crash. Interestingly, the parts of North Wales to lockdown first were Rhyl, Conwy, Denbigh and other areas without a university. Bangor only went (half) into lockdown last week despite being the only university town in the region.
Andy Burnham isn't going down without a fight. I wish more local leaders would do the same. It's the only way these pathetic measures that are crippling businesses will stop.
