Agree, I will start to worry if we don't have anyone else in by the Middlesbrough game as with the season approaching players will have to start making their mind up where they want to go. 1 striker, 1 winger and a left back by the start of the season and I'd say we are in good shape. Plus LJ could be waiting for Holgate and Digby to leave to add extra funds so we can go for more ambitious signings.
Good shape ? Genuine question are you talking about good shape to stay up ? We should be challenging for the top six in this league
I don't buy the waiting argument at all. After all, we're pushing them out of the door and with all the other offloading our wage costs must be the lowest they've been for a very long time. If the wage cap protocols are 60% and youth players are exempt, our wage bill must be tiny and have huge scope to be bringing players in.
In my view we need to get three in before the season starts: a full back, a winger and a striker. Another winger and full back afterwards would be good too. The fact is the spine of the team is good. LJ seems to be placing some faith in the youngsters (namely Smith, Bree and Maris), which is good to see, but we do need more experience than this. The question is really which players are really part of his plans. If the likes of Abbott, Williams and Phenix are part of his plans then we're ok on numbers! I think Digby will be staying too
We can barely get a squad out as evidenced by our 2 subs last night. Without serious additions we struggle to stsy out of thr bottom 6.
I would imagine that, for all the messages of calm coming out of Oakwell, LJ and BM are working frantically to bring new players in and are extremely frustrated that we're not able to get the players that we want. Signing three players on loan at this stage of the summer probably demonstrates that we are having trouble recruiting the permanent targets we want and that a certain amount of panic is setting in. I'd suggest we need another 6 players who are capable of going straight into the first team, but I'd rather us sign nobody than start signing players just to bump the numbers up, as has tended to happen in the past. Some of the players we have brought in under these circumstances have been nothing more than a waste of money and I don't think much thought was given to their signings other than looking at who they previously played for. I don't think it's time for us to start worrying just yet though, but if we don't bring another 2 or 3 decent players in over the next week or so I fear an influx of Leroy Litas and Keith Treacys in August. Of course, the situation is made much worse by the source of 75% of our goals last season both sitting on the injury list.
I admire your optimism but last nights team sheet doesn't shine with positivity for the season. It's not too late but we need to get players in very soon.
