I disagree, we do have enough money. Managers arent on loads of money, Dave Jones was on £10 grand a week at owls and i cant see warnock wanting much more. maybe.... I may be wrong though...

It's easier said than done getting an experienced manager. We've gone for the young managers the last few years because it has been the only thing the club has been able to afford. And being honest, not many managers want to manage a small club like Barnsley.

You are correct. Salary itself is not the issue.

There are no hard & fast rules

As to what makes a successful manager. As you've quite rightly pointed out, the most successful managers for Barnsley during the last fifty years, when it comes to winning promotion, have been appointed from within (Steele, Hunter, Wilson & Ritchie) bar one (Clarke). A lot of that may have been down to financial restrictions, rather than a specific ideology from the board. It may well be Messrs Cryne, Watkins, Mansford & Taylor decide the best route to go down this time is to appoint a Championship experienced manager. However, it surprises me that people are so quick to write off potential candidates simply for failing to fall in between their own specific parameters as to what constitutes the necessary qualifications.

    I was quite specific

In mentioning the managers who won promotion.

Agreed, Bassett just missed out int play-offs.

I still put Bassett down as a successful manager at BFC, I liked his approach to the game and his media skills.

You think we can afford 10k a week? You need to step back a little, the Stones/Butterfield/Vaz Te/Davies/Cup run money has been spent.

    So would I, mate

All I'm suggesting is folk keep an open mind. If their personal criteria for appointing a new manager aren't met, it doesn't automatically mean the new man will be a failure.

I agree with your points. Right now I would be happy with either Mellon or Wilson in fact they are the only two on my list.

Success itself can be subjective. HillCroft themselves may have been successful if we had been in division 3 (League 1 for the bairns) when they took over.
The fact that we've spent a lot of the last 40 years in division 2 probably leaves little opportunity for many managers to have been successful if success is measured by promotion and play offs.

Correct biglil...but asking some to keep an open mind on here...you may as well stand on your back step and bark at the moon.. Its simple just wait and see who gets it, back the board and back the manager...whoever it may be...
