Top man and a brilliant decision. I’m not sure we’d have got to the promised land without Nicky Eaden.
Amazing, weren't we? And to think that some people slated the likes of Eaden, Sheridan, Appleby, Moses. Talking of Sheridan, he was actually a 1950's footballer in every way, who had accidentally turned up in the 90's.
A bloke who sat near near us in the Ponty around that time absolutely hated Eaden, and Scott Jones. But loved Chris Morgan and Sean McClare, both of who could do no wrong. I remember in the dark days of administration when Wigan came and absolutely dicked us, he started telling everyone about how Eaden was the best player on the field. Obviously nobody had forgotten how he used to slate Eaden when he played for us, and a highly amusing altercation ensued, ending with another bloke who sat near us who is genuinely one of the nicest chaps I have met at Oakwell, calling him a "prat". I am definitely of the opinion that there is a very strong inverse correlation between the quality of the football on the field, and the quality of the entertainment in the stands!
I liked Mad Mel. Dour and defensive, but made some excellent signings and definitely moved us on. And he liked a full back/wing back. Or rather he liked to convert any player we'd got into one. Mark Robinson, Owen Archdeacon, even Julian Broddle FFS. But he made a poor error of judgement with Eaden. It's easy to credit your old man with the decision to retain Eaden as it's well documented. But he gets credit for every player during that period from me. We achieved what we did during the 90s because three people shared the same vision and worked together: the chairman, the manager and the head coach: John Dennis, Danny Wilson and Eric Winstanley.
Was about to post something similar about Mel. Letting Eaden go was a poor move, but he did a lot more good than bad. Without a doubt helped lay the very early foundations for what Wilson went on to achieve.
I thought it was Wadsworth who gave the young kids a go (Burton and Bennett spring to mind) Gareth Williams got a hat trick when we won 3-1 at home.
