Football is a results business, most fans don’t care who runs their club as long as they produce something which matches or exceeds their expectations - whether those expectations are reasonable or not is another matter. How many Chelsea fans don’t go because they are owned by a thief who used their club to launder stolen Russian money and to get British visa? Not many I bet. Principles are all well and good in many aspects of life, not so much in football. It’s a fact that attendance at most clubs consists of a base value of fans who go come what may, and then fans who go depending on numerous factors like opposition, spare money, opportunity and current form I bet “do I like the chairman?” Comes a lot lower down the pecking order then “did we win last week?”.
They are clearly not the same thing, if the player retains some value as an asset no club is going to sack them or waste a wage if they refuse to play. The power is with the player, rightly or wrongly.
I’m not sure you are correct in saying ‘no club’. But anyway, all this does is reinforce my point that the club decides the price is right in the particular circumstance, and will therefore sell. The player’s registration is held by the club until his contract expires so he can’t just go and play anywhere else.
Out of interest, if the best offer for Pinnock had been £300k instead of £3m, and he had said that he wouldn’t play unless they let him go, do you think it would have been right to sell him?
If the best offer that came in for Pinnock would have been that. He’d be div 1 standard at best. And offerered less wages. It doesn’t work like that does it. And you know it. I would play him to the remainder of his contract cos if he didn’t. Or performed poorly nobody would want him given that attitude. Ifs and buts are just that.
The point I’m trying to make is that every player has a valuation in terms of his worth to the team on the pitch or, if he is sold, the financial worth to the club. And, of course, whether a suitable replacement is already at the club or can be purchased or borrowed. The club therefore has to make a value judgment in terms of his worth. The idea that the club has to sell, either because the player wants to leave for higher wages, or threatens to go on strike if he doesn’t get his way, is preposterous.
I understand what you’re saying mate. Players wanting to leave and have had their head turned. It’s a difficult situation for 90% of most clubs. If he’s only got 1 yr left on his contract nearly all said clubs would reluctantly allow em to leave. When your talking millions. As for going on strike. I’ve heard 1 or 2 take up that stance. Only the superstars would possibly get away with it. But as previous ,most clubs would get shut. They would be such a pariah in the dressing room, clubs would have no choice. Pinnock at his level would be a Stupid young man to to take such action. Lindsay wouldn’t talk over a new contract . So I’d have Taxied him anywhere out of site of this club. Davies’s contract run out. Hence getting the best for himself salary wise and who could blame him.
One of my main considerations when i discuss this board, at our club. ..is the amount of mistakes they have made despite previous experience (that word again!) at this level. As i have stated before there was considerable interest in Pinnock and we took the first offer....imho this was a mistake and i think Conway admitted as much in a release to the fans. On the pitch our recent performances since the arrival of struber have been good. That doesnt detract from our board, who i simply dont trust overall.
I'm just not sure what you want people to say to you, are you after some sort of grudging respect for sticking to your argument (kind of). You'll not get any respect from me if that's what you are after. You're clearly not a Barnsley fan - a fanatic as you'd go and shout and cheer and get behind the team no matter what happens off the pitch. You're clearly not a supporter, I'd consider myself a supporter, I'll join in with a chant but I'm not fanatical. I support my team though, through thick and thin. So what are you.... You are a consumer. That is all. There are many people who go to football that are like you, otherwise we'd have never had full houses in the Prem. Football needs you, Barnsley need you, but only if you buy a ticket, turn up and support the team. But if you're not paying for a ticket, we don't need you.
Thanks for the self-righteous lecture. I'm sure you're a 'real' fan. Well done. Jolly good. As for you assuming things about me your insight and perceptions are wonderful. Well done again and next time you allude to being some superior sort of footballing disciple I'm sure you're correct again and I'm not worthy of your respect. Good evening.
As I say, I' not sure what you were expecting, but respect cannot have been it. You can't come on here being half arsed and lame and expect good things surely?
I've never said I wouldn't go to the matches, I've always maintained that I would go no matter what, does that make me a better fan than you? Absolutely not, it's an addiction I will never be able to kick is all, you can go or stay away it's your choice which we all respect. You will be welcomed to Oakwell with open arms though
Well I wasn't going to say further on this (and I won't anymore) but....we are all entitled to respect on this board. All of us. As for the 'half arsed, lame' comments the mind boggles about the meaning of such a meaningless phrase. And, further, I wasn't expecting 'good things' ( whatever it is you're implying there. I made an initial point about attending matches and tried to explain in the hope I would get some reasoned responses. In the main I did, but when you responded you did so in a patronizing, belittling way to petty point score. If you make a post in future and I respond it won't be to belittle unless you're being racist/offensive. However, its Xmas, so best wishes. You can have the last word if you wish.
