Well that's probably the worst we've played this season

We got what we deserved today.
In the run up to the game we over-hyped our own team, overestimated the attendance, and underestimated the opposition.
Hatred and vitriol was expressed towards the opposition club and their fans.
We adopted a chip on the shoulder, negative attitude that will always hold our team and our town back.

It was the same when we played them earlier in the season. We won though.

I'm sure I went to Bramall Lane earlier in the season and saw a Wilson side beat them 1-0.

Not that Johnson is to blame for this defeat. No one is to blame. We lost this match for the same reason we lost home and away to MK Dons and Swindon, and away at Preston and Chesterfield (although we do appear to be a match for Bristol City; their style of play must suit us). We lost because we are not one of the best sides in the division. We lost because the sides above us have had a few years to put a team together, where as we had a couple of weeks in the summer, after we sold O'Grady, plus a January transfer window, and even then we've lost the two most influential loan players we brought in: Ryan Willams to injury, O'Sullivan being recalled.

We've got the basis of a decent team, but it's still a couple of players short. We need someone capable of running at the opposition with the ball. We thought we'd got them in Jennings and Treacy, but neither ever looked like they could even be bothered to get in shape, so we signed Williams and chased O'Sullivan. With either one in the team we look pretty good. With both in a 4-5-1 formation I reckon we could look sensational. But we've got neither at the moment, so better teams in the division like Sheff Utd remain better. Johnson has had a go at recruiting in that area, but at this stage in the season it's difficult. Declan John and Cameron Stewart haven't had the same impact as O'Sullivan and Williams. Although to be fair to John, he's played the majority of his games at left back where he doesn't look comfortable.

Back to the quote: I believe the idea we'd be 3-0 down at half time under Wilson to be a nonsense. For my money we haven't been all that different since Johnson has taken over. Not that we should expect it after such a short time. After Wilson was sacked we were fortunate enough to play 8 games in a row against what many would consider to be lesser opposition. We drew at Orient, lost at Crawley and won the rest. It was a very good return, but if you'd taken each game in isolation, you'd have fancied our chances. Much more so than in our last 3 games where we've drawn two and lost one. In fact, if you look at our games since Christmas, just about every result looks predictable other than the home defeat to Fleetwood and the mauling we suffered away at Crawley, both of which you'd expect us to have done better. The first cost our manager his job, the second was a bit of an aberration, no doubt due to the upheaval at the club after that sacking. Other than that, the away point at Bristol City is the only one where we really appear to have performed above ourselves.

The play-offs are still possible. You couldn't ask for a couple of better away games than Colchester and Notts County. If we don't win those we don't deserve the play-offs. If we do, our result against Chesterfield might define the season. The last 3 games look too close to call as we play similar placed teams.

Whether we make it or not, I believe we've recruited well this season after starting from pretty much nothing. I think the board acted far too quickly in sacking Wilson but I also like his replacement. Whatever happens in these final 6 games, I'm already looking forward to next season.

Chester at home is the worst i've seen in 25 years watching them. League wise though it's sad that just like when we've had bigger than normal followings on the road at the likes of Preston and Chesterfield, again the players weren't up for it as much as the fans.

Donny has nothing on Crawley and Swindon away. Doesn't even come close .....

Excellently put not sure why so many people can't see the lack of any change. We are where we are. We are the team we are.

As so often is the case - wise words from Jay. But unusually I was at the game today. Nine hours on the road for that. And sure it would have been good to see us win. We did fail to handle a larger more physical mature team. But our potential was clear. I agree with Jay, we need a few more players and more time. But still glad I drove the 9 hours.

I'd blocked the Chester game out. I'd forgotten all about that.

It's all about opinions but in mine, if the board hadn't acted, we'd still be in a relegation battle, several hundred thousand pounds down on gate receipts and no one in their right mind would have renewed their season ticket. It got so bad that even season ticket holders weren't attending, all patience had gone and although we were still managing to scrape the odd home win, it was unwatchable and we were never going to score another goal away from home never mind get a point.

A bit like when Ritchie was fired, there was no light at the end of the tunnel and the board acted bravely and in both the short and long term interests of the club

I don't remember us ever being in a relegation battle. We were 7 points above the bottom 4 when Wilson was sacked and 7 points from the playoffs. If we were in a relegation battle, we were also in a fight for promotion. As for scraping the odd home win, we'd won 4 home league games on the spin before the Fleetwood game, conceding just 1 goal. So our last 5 home league games under Wilson (won 4, lost 1) is a better record than our 5 home games since he was sacked (Won 3, drawn 1, lost 1).
