If Stones does go this summer and the windfall from that is going to be reinvested into the club then I'd do exactly that, as in invest it into the future of the club rather than passing it on the players, agents and other clubs. It will still be a drop in the ocean compared to the money other clubs have behind them with parachute payments etc so a club like ours can never be in a position to buy success in this league. Given that the ownership of the ground and land is a bit complicated though this might make doing anything too drastic a bit difficult. And rather than spend say, £5m on a new stand, do you have to ask the question of whether to move and effectively get a mortgage on a new out of town stadium? It's certainly one thing that attracts new fans, apart from missing Oakwell though I'd miss the location more, it would be strange not being able to have a few beers in town, finish a pint off at quarter to 3 and still have time to see the kick-off. Of course, I wouldn't blame Mr Cryne at all if he wanted to bank the money.
The last thing we should ever think about is moving to some flatpack shitheap. A new 3 tiered stand with corners to both the ponty and north stand would be suffice. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
When we already have 3/4 of a modern stadium with a sizeable car park and world class training facilities, I cannot for the life of me imagine why moving would make sense.
You can check out various types of planning applications on this site, whcih is a nosey parker's dream: https://www.barnsley.gov.uk/barnsley-maps/planning-explorer/ From my (uneducated) perusal, it doesn't look as though there is anything in prospect presently that would allow redevelopment of the West Stand. Interesting to note though that outline permission exists for the erection of 32 dwellings on the old Grove Street School site.
I'd like to see the corners filled in, though the worst one for me is between the East Stand and the North Stand. In hindsight, it would have been much more sensible to build the North Stand the same height as the Ponty, but wrapping it round to join up with the East Stand. As a non-architect / engineer, I have no idea how that would have impacted on costs, but I'm sure it would have looked better, and been better for atmosphere. Maybe the floodlight pylon in the corner was a factor as well? To be honest, I quite like the fact that we're one of the few teams in the league to still have proper floodlights. Retro-tastic.
I remember John Dennis at the time saying economically it didn't stack up. In terms of the price per seat) payback
Many moons back I climbed to the top of the floodlight between the Ponty End and the old Brewery stand for a dare. At the top was a box for all the electrical stuff so I decided to stand on top of that with arms stretched out, quite a view I must say. Oh to be 17 years old and fearless. Now when I walk past it I always think "YOU SILLY SOD"
Big for our standards i.e anything over 15k, which we will have a few in the coming season. That end of town will be gridlocked for the Wednesday/Newcastle/Villa games, exit's in and out of the ground are terrible and it takes an age for away fans to get away from the Metrodome car park. Go on their forums after the game for their experiences.
Agree area cant cope however the solution could be build a new stadium on the old brewery site then link that and extend the business park ( halfords ) via a new road, traffic can then go via wakefield road cutting town centre out ....we still then have the training grounds close by...
Mentalist! Is there some sort of ladder or staircase which you scale, or you just did a free climb up to the top? By the way, have you ever seen this? Makes me feel absolutely nauseous! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7k4Xk1mEwmI
lol nowt cheap these days lol it would however serve and meet both sides of the arguement re new stadium and the development of the oakwell area without too much bother for local residents plus bringing much needed employment into the area
About 15 years ago they identified a bit of land between Capitol Close and Higham Lane behind the Toby Carvery on the J37 roundabout, the land is still there, unused. The obvious advantage is links to the M1, it could also include a platform for the Barnsley-Huddersfield line.
serious hand and feet sweats just watching it. i also get shooting pains in my feet when i watch stuff like that. Dunno why. Should have seen me do the rides at the top of the stratosphere. Jesus H... That was an experience.
