1980/81

1980/81 - now that was horrible! There were a few spats beneath the stand during the game courtesy of some local headcases hanging around the bogs etc. After the game, they attacked the Barnsley supporters as they got to their coaches - and it is fair to say that we did ok in quite a few of the exchanges.
Incientally; how many Reds fans would you say were at that game? The atmosphere was great inside the ground, especially when we went 1-0 up thanks to an Ian Evans header.

Previous round v Cardiff

Do you recall referee Kevin McNally adding on about 8/10 minutes injury time with Barnsley 2-0 up? The Taffs ended up equalising and then 'Banger' scored a trademark 25-yarder to win the game 3-2. After the game the aforementioned referee had to have a police escort from the pitch as those in the seated section of the Main Stand began hurling their cushions at him.
The first round that year at Scunnny was eventful too - delayed kick-off etc.

At the Old Show Ground ??

Remember it well . The Cardiff game , for me , showed that particular team was capable of holding it's own in a higher division . McNally was the forerunner of the likes of Willard , Rennie , Kettle , Cain etc !!!:(( :(( :((

McNally and glorious Cup runs!

I can also remember the following weekend some scandal surrounding McNally at the Manchester derby.
That season was just quite simply brilliant! Beating Rotherham in the Cup at Millmoor - our first win there for 42 years methinks (9,000 Reds in attendance). Enfield and insults about camels etc. And the great performance at Boro (after the initial 20 mins when they got their goals) - we should have least brought them back to Oakwell for another crack at them

Wonderful memories

Bettered only by 1996/97 . Interesting to note that , due to having two goalscoring midfielders in Glavin and Banks , we didn't mind the fact that our two main strikers ( Aylott and Parker ) only scored 10 league goals apiece .

The camel banner

Was made my me and some mates. 'Enfield Are Camel Fodder' in the middle of the Ponty. We took it on the special to the replay only for some copper to tell us we couldn't take it in. The Enfield fans had responded - down the 'home' end was a banner with 'Enfield Fodder Poisons Camels'

35,000 at White Hart Lane to see us take the piss!! Glorious days.

RE: The camel banner

Ahhhh! Top day out was the evening at ***** Hart Lane. I can remember overhearing a copper turning round to his mate and saying "they've brought more than Arsenal".
Well done on the banner by the way - i think there was a photo of it in the following home games' programme

RE: The camel banner

Predominantly Spurs fans there - remember some poor tarn lad gettin' a reight shoein' on the way back to the train. Can't take all the credit for the banner - Pete & Mike Heseltine involved - in fact we made it round their house!!

Special took the sllllooooowwwwww route home along the East Coast - we got back well into the early hours and I had a maths exam the next morning!!

The special home....

I was on the special too.... it took forever like you say. Did you see any of the missiles being lobbed down onto us from the flats? Apparently, quite a few coaches got damaged after the game too.
Talking of slooooow specials - the one back from Plymouth (same season) took over 7 hours. We landed in Tarn at about 1pm. A mate of mine got out when the train was stationary just outside Birmingham - to the words of "f@@@ it! I'm off in Bull Ring", he jumped off and set off along some wasteland. There was nothing available on that bloody train either - a fine example of the days' travel mode and attitude to football supporters back then.

RE: The special home....

Aye but at least it were cheap!! Still got a wadge of special tickets I saved from the late 70's/early 80's. Had the best of times on 'em, with some top, top lads. Everything I know about losing money at cards I learnt on the specials!! [IMG]

We had a 1/3 of one end

But i remember the whole ground erupting when we scored so we must have had at least 2000 there! My guess would be 2500 - 3500!

It was just mayhem outside, all of a sudden hell let loose!! What a laugh.... i ran between two parked busses and ran into a WH fan. He swung at me like monkeys normally do, i ducked and he hammered his hand in the bus. I gave him a good crack on the nose and then decided to roll under bus! There were a lot of heads being kicked!
