I'm pretty certain it's Ken Oliver He was a superb header of the ball, despite being only about 5 ft 10 ins tall. He scored our goal in front of 39,250 in the 1961 6th round replay v Leicester at Oakwell on a Wednesday afternoon.

I don't know what our team was for that Plymouth match, which we won 2-0, but my copy of Greville Firth's "Oakwell: The Official History Of Barnsley Football Club" does give our line-up for our 1st round FA Cup tie v Bradford Park Avenue on a date very close to that of the Plymouth match. This was: Arblaster, Murphy, Booth, McPhee, Winstanley, Howard, Brown, Lea, Dean, Boardman, Sharp.

Les Lea was a good player. Considering that we had such a superb centre half partnership in Winstanley and Howard, as well as the talented Norman Dean, as well as Lea, it seems surprising we only managed a mid-table finish that season, and also lost 2-0 to Rhyl at Old Trafford in a 2nd round second replay FA Cup tie.

Don’t know about Ken Oliver but sure you’re right.

It was the quarter final replay and we lost 2-1…. Gordon Banks was in goal for Leicester

Yes, we played Rhyl 3 times in the space of 10 days, drew 0-0 away, then 1-1 at home, so played at Old trafford for the 3rd time and lost 2-0!

Barrie Wood the Lancashire and England cricketer was playing for Bradford PA, a Northern Premier League team. I remember that we were fortunate to beat them 1-0.

I’ve checked old programmes and we changed to 3.00 ko on Saturdays for the 1976/77 season.
I haven’t checked every game but assume every game since then will have been 3.00

Yes that right so in the early seventies it would have been 3.15 , also in the sixties we used to kick off home evening matches at 7.15pm with only 10 minutes for half time which of course meant the match was scheduled to end at approx 8.55 which made catching your bus home was not a problem & neither was getting up early next morning for school or work , it all made sense in those days.

I always thought evening kick offs used to be 7.30.
I’ve seen several progs from early sixties where ko times were 3.00 and 7.30 so they must at some stage have changed to 3.15 and 7.15…
Pretty boring stuff so I’ll sign off now

I think it may have been the 67/68 promotion season. England had just won the world cup under the guidance of World Cup Willy in 66, and Toby was Barnsley's answer. You used to be able to buy paper Toby Tyke stickers from the souvenir shed on the ponty end. I think Toby's arrival brought about the end of ,The Colliers, as the club's official nickname too...

I have checked programmes and to confirm your superb analogy, the first picture of Toby Tyke on front covers was season 67/68.
It makes sense to assume this was the year of his birth as previous prog. front pages had no mention of him.

For a season or two, the picture was in the bottom right hand corner and about a sq inch.

From about 69 the front showed a coloured picture of Toby about 5 sq inches.

Great thread. Really enjoyed reading it. I'm a sucker for a bit of nostalgia.

Arabian Ian , I have a spare copy of a programme from Jan 63 with an action photo on the front that your mug has a copy of.
Can you message me your address and I’ll send it on.
It’s of no real value but it’ll have more significance kept with your mug.

Will the message go into my inbox on this forum ?
