Narrow minded ness? Come off it, it's just an opinion.

I'm not talking about going away on holiday's, I'm talking about living abroad.

I believe you should make the effort to speak English in public in England if you live here.

If I wanted to live in Spain I'd make sure I'd had lessons / studied the language. It'd be the decent thing to do.

Worryingly we've got whole communities in some cities in the country where they only mix with there own people & when they go in City centres they'll only use shops ran by there own people & many don't speak / try speaking English.

This is no good for society & only helps build up prejudice & tensions between people.

Got to have some where to spend the hard earned though.

Originals and best jeans co. I'm struggling to think of a shop in barnsley I would regularly use outside of the ' weekly shop' options.

Barnsley is slowly rotting wth another high street store this time Dorothy Perkins closing yet there are countless cafes in town. Which will slowly sart to follow suit.

Well said. Back in college days I knew of people who'd grass up asians speaking in their native tongue to teachers. I never did but I fully agreed with the reasoning behind it. By doing so they aren't intergrating enough in our society and it's uneasy not knowing what they are talking about because for all we know it could be something nasty.

I worked for a few months at a college in Bradford and the rule was English only.

As for Brits who live abroad they don't fully integrate. My Sister in Law speaks Broad Yorkshire to her Husband in Public. They moved to Spain this year from Cyprus.

I teacher trained in 86-87 with a guy who had come from Pakistan as a 15 year old and didn't speak a word of English when he arrived. He told me many times that he thought there were too many uneducated Asians being allowed in to the UK.

Like the Brits in Spain then ? The ones that live there,m but expect the Spaniards to speak English, because we are all in Europe. I have some friends that lived in Spain and they say that the Brits are the worst in Europe for not learning the host Countries language. They have live in Germany, Greece, Malta,Italy,Spain,Holland and now Portugal. They do speak the language of all the Countries they have lived in, but it seems that the vast majority of Brits just expect everyone to know English and complain about it if they dont !
So other Nationalities using their own language here in UK is not really that bad is it ?

See my above post, why is it OK for us Brits to speak English abroad, but it seems that other people are not allowed to speak THEIR language here! Hypocritical bas tards !

I agree with you; if you intend to live in a county that speaks a different language then the minimum requirement of residency should be a command of the language. It annoys the hell out of me in this country and it would be hypocritical to not expect ex pats to learn to learn in other countries.

I don't agree with doing that.

I wouldn't live abroad unless I had a half decent grasp of the language.

There's nothing more embarrassing than seeing someone like Beckham who'd been over there 5 years & still couldn't speak Spanish.

At least the Brits abroad will mix though.

We've got many Eastern European & Asian people who only use their own people's shops

I think it should be a citizenship requirement for anyone living in our country to take English lessons and reach a basic standard. In my last job I interviewed lots of people some who had been here 20 to 30 years didn't speak any of the language and lived in their own little enclaves. I don't think this is the way forward towards a vibrant multi cultural society it's just trying to recreate your home abroad. I accept we all do this to an extent when I lived abroad I was always desperate for news of the mighty reds but at the same time I took the time to learn the languages albeit to a basic standard of the countries I lived in. Any other attitude is almost an insult in my opinion and gives ammunition to the little Englanders.

My auntie spends the majority of the year in Tenerife because the warmer weather helps with her MS condition. Because of this she has made sure she's fluent in Spanish. There was a time when she was outside a cafe talking to her English mate visiting her and she overheard on another table a Spanish couple talking about her how she's ignorant for living in their country and speaking English, so she ranted back at them in Spanish and they said sorry for assuming.

If you are just visiting a country briefly learning the language isn't that important. But if you plan to live there long term it's just manners to try and fit in better by learning the native tongue as a basic minimium. If you want to live in a foreign country so badly you should want to learn the language anyway.

I think that's all the vast majority of people want,i certainly do.
institutions like the nhs having to employ translators is wrong and just another drain on resources.

If they are only visiting the country no. But if they live here full time then they should want to speak English.

All the foreign lads/lasses at work can/do speak English. Some better than others, but they do. When talking between themselves, they speak their native tongue. Naturally.

Its like expecting them to dream in English purely because theyre living in England. I know loads of asians who talk to each other in their own language but have no issue speaking in English to English people.
