What are your favourite views in the greater Barnsley area?

Top of Becon fields over looking Elsecar & Hoyland that view is epic, its the path that the needles eye is on btw.

 

Wooley Edge viewing area - looking south west; or a bit higher up nat the christmas tree farm looking south east when the mist is in the valley (though i suppose most of that scene is West Yorkshire - 'cept Royston / Monkton)

 

Starting from the inlet of Langsett Res and looking upstream along the Porter of the Little Don River from the edge of Crooklands Wood. You could imagine you were in Scotland. Its right on the Metropolitan boundary with Sheffield.

Outside Cherry Tree pub in High Hoyland, Top of Locke Park & Kingstone fields towards tarn.

 

There's only one that does it for me, the view from the top of the steps up to the West Stand at Oakwell, looking down onto the pitch. This one always brings a lump to my throat, partly because I'm glad to be back again and partly because I always remember my Mum's first comment when she first saw the same view: "It's all in colour!" - bear in mind that this was probably around 1970, and we only had a black and white television; helped by my Dad I had tried to educate my Mum in the joys of football via Match of The Day, but her reaction on reaching the top of those steps in the West Stand was unforgettable. Sadly, my Mum died 15 years ago but my Dad is still with us at the age of 95, and he can still remember my Mum's reaction that day.

Yes, there are many better views in the greater Barnsley area, but that's the one that does it for me (and hopefully will do again in just under 3 weeks time!)

Not too secret, it has to pay for itself!!

The other Wentworth house is much grander!!

 

That quote really hits home as my dad's farm is just off wakey road and my favourite view is standing there looking out across Barnsley with Oakwell in the East and the whole of Barnsley set out in front off you. It's amazing how beautiful areas of Barnsley are and what a typical Northern sterotype the media always portrays of the place.

It wasn't great enjoying the views when we were muck spreading. Once stank out the whole of Athersley with the Chronicle reporting sewer problems, another piece of insight from the Chron!

The history of the rivalry between them both is interesting.

And you'd be surprised by how many people have never heard of us (Northern College that is, not Barnsley FC)

Aristocratic oneupmanship while our ancestors eat dirt and lived in hovels.

 

My all time favourite is... as you go along the A635 past Cawthorne towards Denby Dale, past the clay pipe works on your left then turn immediately left up a lane which I think goes to Hoylandswaine.
About a mile on your right hand side is a public footpath which crosses some fields on the brow of the hill.
After a 5 minute walk come to a stile and behold the view from there !
Looks down into the wooded valley to Gunthwaite and then way, way out to the Pennines on the left, Deffer Woods to the right and Emley Moor straight ahead.
On a day like today I can think of no better place to see the glories of our native land.
