Southgate does have the knack of getting players to under perform, so maybe the best job for him would be manager of Spain!

Well I’m looking forward to Gareth stepping down. I’m tired of Boring opposition to death….

And before people start handing me stats on number of finals, etc. please consider the easy run ins we’ve had the last few years. This image highlights this one…. Image1721033035.917982.jpg

I think it’s time for him to move on. He’s done a fantastic job in turning us around, but I just don’t think he’s got the tactical nous to win us the big games against the best teams.

Southgate has done an excellent job, when you consider that he inherited a side that had just been knocked out at the last 16 stage by Iceland. But it's time for him to go. The work he's done to get rid of club cliques and have the England team acting like a team in their own right is a big reason we are getting to the latter stages of tournaments, but his tactical deficiencies and inability to react to match situations is the reason we've not won a tournament.

He really should've gone after the Italy final, where he failed to notice Italy getting more and more control of the game, and waited till after the equaliser to react. This time, we've been outclassed by a better team. No shame in that, but he's reverted back to 4231 formation, with Kane, Saka, Foden and Bellingham as the front 4. That combination has been awful all tournament. Palmer had done enough off the bench to get a starting place, probably over Bellingham (Or Mainoo with Bellingham playing deeper), while Kane should've been nowhere near the starting line up. Then, in the second half, he failed to do anything about the fact that Williams constantly had acres of space, with Walker having a shocker and Saka doing nothing to help him, and that ultimately cost us.

No, he didn’t get it on with his missus. That’s what the obsession’s abart.

I’ve always appreciated Gareth for the level of stability he’s brought to the England setup. His one main fault is the loyalty he has shown to players who have served him well in the last 8 years. His choice to keep starting Harry Kane every match was, from a footballing point of view, simply wrong. In effect we’ve played the tournament with ten men. We say Spain were better throughout the event but would we have so much behind them if we started Watins every match? So with some reluctance I think it would be appropriate now for him to hand over the reins.

I think the over reliance on Kyle Walker has been a problem too.

Against lesser opposition I felt we should have started a full back like Trent or Trippier with a much better delivery & passing range & then against better opposition where Walker’s supposedly a superior defender he’s not performed well at all with several goals conceded coming down his side.

It’s as if Walker’s got this undroppable tag because he once had a good game against an inconsistent Mbappe.

Walk away on his own as arguably the best, most consistent England manager we've ever had & sit and watch as people start to realise how unbelievable the job he did was.

Gareth in my view should walk away with his head held high.
Since he took over he has established us a force in world football.
A trophy would have been nice to crown his tenure but he can move on now knowing he's done a great job for his country.

I don't see how anyone can look back at the last 30+ years and conclude we're likely to do better with someone else in charge.

Be careful what you wish for.

People believe, both at club and international level, that their team has a divine right to win, and if that isn't happening, it's the manager's fault and he should be sacked.

The big problem is there’s always better managers out there so people are always saying ‘sack Southgate & bring x in’ but none of the top managers want to manage international sides until their knocking on & the lower work load suits them like Capello, Sven, Trappatoni etc.

I think he’s had a bad tournament & we were pretty fortunate to make the final but he’s still done a good job overall.

Can I ask tho Dyson what your honest opinion is regarding this tournament?

Do you think we’ve played well?
Was it the right approach to various games?
Was he too loyal to certain players?
    Did certain players need dropping?

The biggest question tho for me is do you think another manager would get more out of this team?

It’s an opinion sport is football. I get we all may differ but I’m more interested in what the Southgate supporters genuinely think regarding our approach to this tournament.

If you question things then maybe his time is up.

I’ve listened to talk sport most of this morning and can’t help but agree with what Simon Jordan said.

If we’d have met Spain or Germany in a last 16 or QF we’d be out and saying it was abject failure.

In 2020 we lost to a team we should have beat yet played a very poor Germany side to get through.

In 2018 we lost to a team we normally beat on a regular basis.

The first time we come up against serious opposition we can’t get over the line. There’s always too many questions.

The luck of the draw has saved a lot of aggro towards Southgate this tournament. We have struggled against poor opposition yet somehow found a way to get through. Eventually tho your luck runs out and that’s what happened.

I was always Southgate IN up until the end of this tournament. I can’t see us improving tho with him still in charge. I honestly feel he’s took us as far as HE can.
