True we should have got them high on opium like the warlords did in China. A lot more peaceful way of doing things. That said, Afghanistan has no Hong Kong to pinch whilst everyone is too high to remember signing over a lease.

Thereabouts. The Normans weren't French, they were Vikings (North-men). Had conquered that region of France, hence Normandy. But had a policy of assimilation through marriage, business & adopting cultural practices, going as far as the middle east. William 1st threw that trend with total domination of England post invasion, the harrying of the north etc. Willian 2nds nephew Stephen & daughter Mathilda battled it out for the crown. Mathilda's son henry 2nd eventually succeeded & became the Plantagenet dynasty until Richard 3rd, with England being the major part of their Kingdom. It was only after the War of the Roses & the advent of the Tudors that England became the centre of the Kingdom & French territories were part that & fought over with the French.
The 3 lions badge was Richard 1st (Lionheart), but in truth more a French thing than English..
In the shell of a nut..:)
    This is a good watch..

Didn't Stephen have to denounce his heir in exchange for peaceful rule.

If I'm right, he was captured by Mathilda, but allowed to keep the throne on condition he named her son Henry(2nd) as his heir. It's a fascinating bit of history..:)

Yes the Normans were the descendants of Vikings, but they’d gone native, they dressed like girls, they ate frogs legs and they spoke with a funny accent.

A lot of old churches have norman fabric; often built upon earlier anglo-saxon remnants.

It was probably built by Anglo-Saxons under the orders of Normans. But the Norman and Plantagenet kings were very keen on building edifices to God, probably because they know they were complete ba*tards in this life and they needed a way in to Heaven when their time came.
