So one act of note in the next seven to eight months then. Have a look at O2 academy for Leeds or the academies at Manchester, First direct leeds or sheff arena- we are talking nightly shows not token one offs. Little Mix played Huddersfield last year. I get that, but Barnsley is never going to be a regular venue for current bands like you're proposing it could. We are surrounded by big cities and they will always be the first port of call for 99% of acts.
To put a gig on you need a promoter. I know all the Leeds promoters, big & small. Not one would think of putting a gig on in Barnsley. Promoting is a risky game & you give yourself the best chance of covering your costs & hopefully making a few quid on top. I could see one off mini festival type things working, maybe with a half decent headline act, but a regular venue, no. Barnsley can't really support a decent nightclub, never mind a live venue. It's a shame, but bands don't do tours of 60 plus dates these days, they will play 10-12 big venues & play to the same numbers at a much greater profit. PA systems and venues didn't allow bands to do that in the 60's.
Parking? Drinking should not be done at all if driving imo. A night out watching a band would be great to do on my own town.
I think the metrodome could be promoted more and have a few bigger gigs on as it big enough. But also we could do with a venue to get up and coming bands on, somewhere that holds around 800-1000 capacity. I'm not asking the Arctic Monkeys to choose playing Barnsley over Sheffield or anything like that, I just wouldn't mind us having a smaller live music venue that has a couple of gigs a week on.
Why not do it then? Not having a go at you. Would love someone from tarn to do something like that & make it a success. I'd buy a ticket.
Back when the indie scene was still excellent circa 2005 - 2010 we went to many a gig at Escobar (Wakefield), The Hop (Wakefield) and The Lucorum which all had big name bands on. Even The Walkabout was listed on See Tickets for a time as a live music venue and Pete Doherty was scheduled to perform there. It’s a shame that bands don’t take the plunge and play the towns anymore but I can understand it from a financial point of view. Frank Turner did play The Old No7 a few years ago, mind.
