Obviously EU funding came to help regeneration a few years later - which presumably will have funded the link roads, but the jobs that brought are low skilled and low paid.
Manvers helped with jobs but you are right, these are low skilled, low wage jobs. The whole dearne area suffered and continues to suffer. The link road and the dearne valley parkway took the people away from the villages to the towns and out of town shopping centers, there’s probably many a study on the benefits/lack of on that topic. its also Ironic the way the Brexit vote went in the area isn’t it.
Driving through Goldthorpe on a Saturday afternoon towards Barnsley for the match is like driving through a land that time forgot. Virtually every shop is shuttered and desolate. The bypass did kill it in my opinion, taking all the through traffic away from what was once a very busy and thriving little town, albeit in the 60s and 70s. Memories of catching the bus from Darfield to Goldthorpe to go shopping on a Saturday morning are still vivid. A crowded bustling place. A very similar thing happened to Brigg, their bypass ruined the street shops. Nobody went there any more. Bypasses are double edged, they relieve the traffic but kill the trade that was there. Closing the local industry didn't help !
