Bedknobs and Broomsticks Soccer Frenzy on the C64+ Now that was a class game.

A great big Hippo in goal with 4 elephants along the back line. Now that's a defence and a half!

The only problem was waiting for half an hour for it load up from the tape machine. I didn't have the 1564 disc drive at the time.

In my opinion the best ever football game has to be Sensible World of Soccer 96/97 (the Amiga version)... it might not look as good or be as realistic as some of the modern games, but it's just so much more fun... and that's what computer games should be all about. :)
The career mode was quite amazing, you could start a game with any club that you can possibly think of and end up as the national coach of El Salvador (if you were very unlucky). You can't even choose Barnsley in the newer games ffs (doh)

Also, Championship Manager used to be pretty good until CM 97/98. That was the last good game of the series and probably my 2nd favourite football game. Barnsley were still in the Premier League which makes that version even better - it was a nice challenge to try to avoid getting relegated.
I lost my interest in the CM series soon after that as the game became way too detailed... not only you had to choose the players who play and sign new ones and select the formation & tactics (which used to be the fun part) but you had to make individual training schedules for each player as well and to be the physio and all that kind of crap. :p I guess it would have been possible to automate all that but it never seemed to work very well. Sometimes it felt like nothing that you did had any kind of an effect on anything.

The new Pro Evolution Soccers and FIFAs aren't bad either, but the selection of teams and leagues in those is very limited, and they concentrate far too much on being ultra-realistic and looking so detailed that you can see the players' nasal hair swaying in the wind. Watching goalless draws on telly is already boring enough, and even though realism can be a good thing sometimes, I want to play games that are fun.

Oh, I forgot my current favourite!

It's called Netsoccer

Okay, it's very unrealistic, it looks quite ugly, but it's free so you don't lose anything (except time) if you try it. :)
Unlike in most other footie games, you control just one player in your team - the others are human players too! (so you play it on the internet obviously) You can start a new team with your mates and play the game as you like, or try to get to one of the good (already existing) teams. There's a built-in chat thingy in the game as well, it's a lot of fun really.
Go on, give it a try, as far as I know there are no Barnsley fans playing this game and the Sheff Utd fans are mocking me so I could need some support there. :D

Got to be Pro Evo, no question. The others have nostalgic value but are basically *****. Grew up playing MatchDay and The Boss on speccy. Also played a lot of Sensible Soccer on SNES on those long, late nights after going clubbing. (blaze)

Or Soccer Sevens on the zx spectrum.

Or actually Olympic Soccer / Soccer 97 on the playstation one. Alan Green is genius on it.
