I have the same feeling as my first season back as a season ticket holder in 2014 the second coming of Wilson a reset was needed and I would be happy with a top ten but with loads of potential for the season after. We all know how that worked out and not saying Duff appointment has any similarities to Wilson but it's just the same feeling let's hope I'm right this time.
I’ve voted mid table. I expect we will be top half; I think we’ve a good chance of top six. But the question is the minimum I’d ‘accept’ - and that is probably the answer. Though to be honest, even if it’s lower-mid table, as long as we see application and effort on the pitch, and improvement if we get off to a slow start, then that’ll be fine. We need to have realistic expectation, this league isnt a cake walk - there are some decent players in this division, and I think there will be more than six squads rated higher than how ours will end up. Duff may make a difference, and I think we may need to overachieve, relative to our squad as opposed to crowd size or budget, to reach the playoffs. We also need to make sure we are on a sound footing financially this season. So there will be several more outgoings, hopefully with decent fees, and you’d imagine little spent on replacing them, with a lower wage expectation from those coming in too. Those saying top two, if you’re being serious, give your head a shake. We all want that, but you won’t accept anything but that? Grow up. The club was messed up royally last season, yes on the pitch, but also massively off it - whilst they have started, a lot of that mess still needs to be sorted. Top two and promotion would be absolutely marvellous and should be what we aspire towards but to suggest you will accept no less without wanting the new manager out? Come on.
Last season had such a negative affect on me, mostly to down to the impact the then owners and coaches had on the supporters, i hated the toxic or sombre atmospheres and negativity around the players and club, so what im getting at is i believe the negativity is driven by results ie previous big Val season everyone happy last season poor results disaster. So i am trying to work out what the majority will accept to ensure Duff gets the backing they need and the atmosphere in the ground that i enjoy being apart. I believe anything less than up and around the playoffs all season with some early wins or the atmosphere will be poor again.
I can't give a league position that I think will be acceptable because I honestly don't know. I don't know how good the teams are in league one or how good the relegated teams will be and I have no idea how good our squad will be either. I believe that the minimum from the players is to give 100% effort each week. Something which the majority of our squad know they didn't do last season. The minimum for the manager is to try to win every game. U absolutely hate seeing us trying to draw or get a lucky goal to edge out a borefest. The minimum for the owners is to do their best to ensure that we have players of adequate quality in each position. I don't want to get to October and hear the manager moaning that they hadn't backed him. If they were honest during the recruitment of the manager that should not be the case. The minimum for Khaled is for him to answer every question put to him honestly and to the best of his ability. No dodging questions or lying. And for him to attempt to improve the matchday experience by listening to complaints and ideas and implementing changes where there is little cost to the club. The minimum as a whole is for the club to make changes in January that shows an intent to improve on the league position in the second half of the season.
But in January we might be rock bottom. In which case it's obvious we need to improve. In January we might be top. In which case we only need to carry on. It can't be right (Shirley) for everyone to think "well, if all these League 1 teams turn out to be pretty good, then it's OK for us to finish 20th" I think that the original question - where it's acceptable to finish in League 1- is basically a "how massive are we?" question. Which is pretty self revealing and provides a good guide as to how self deluded or not we are. My own self delusion makes a top 10 as acceptable. Beyond that is a moan. But not necessarily a manager sacking scenario.
You've posted this exact same prediction for the last 10 (?) pre-seasons. Every time you do, I realise that I don't know anything about football either and regret even making a prediction on this thread.
Mid table is the lowest Id take, and anything below 16th would be very disappointing. The Play offs will probably be beyond us this season, but a good and improved and confident top 10 season, yes be ok with that.
I'd like to see us challenge for the top 6. As long as we win more games than we lose and don't get sucked into a relegation scrap, I'll be happy enough. But at the same time, Rovrum keep making it look easy.
Thats a good point actually, and I dont know how they/Rotherham do keep doing it. It makes me think if they can do it, then why cant we. But we have some other important things to sort out as well like the finances, so its probably not going to happen this season.
I know "cake wake" is a typo but I think the position will be closer to attending a wake with a cake than it being a cake walk. Takes more than a change of league to change the team's direction.
Do I expect it? No. However, those higher within the club plunged us into this division. I therefore feel they should be under immense pressure to make sure we get back at the first time of asking.
