ahhhh derwent water. went there with school and stayed at the youth hostel across road from the lake. in the youth hostel grounds there was a fantastic waterfall. and the mountain range was fantastic, cant remember if it was catbells or scarfell pike.
Striding Edge is spectacular but Jack's Rake is the best I've been to (near Langdale Pikes). Also Wasdale Head is great.
Re: Striding Edge is spectacular Jack's Rake is graded as a rock climb, I've done it... once and that was enough for me. :nails: It's the most difficult ascent of any fell in the whole of the Wainwright guides. http://www.walkingenglishman.com/lakes6.htm http://www.outdoorsmagic.com/forum/gallery/jackand39s-rake/13601.html
Re: Striding Edge is spectacular I chickened out and went up Easy Gully instead, only wearing Doc Martens at the time. Langdale is a good walking area lots of varying routes + the old Dungeon Ghyll pub of course! http://www.odg.co.uk/home/index.cfm?id=1
Re: Striding Edge is spectacular I'll bookmark this thread, planning on doing Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis this year, done Snowdon already and practised all over the Yorks 3 peaks and Kinder Scout. Maybe then l'll see if l'm capable of the national 3 peaks. With a bit of scenery this may get the missus involved instead of her living the lifestyle of a wag and calling me a geeky b*stard for walking/hiking.
Re: Striding Edge is spectacular Wus ! Try castle crag. Park at Grange in Borrowdale. Nice walk through a wood alongside Derwen****er then a sharp climb for about 15 minutes or so. The views down into borrowdale and up into Keswick are exceptional. If I've got this right there should be some pictures. BTW these photos were taken on 17th March 2009 and I got sunburned !
Dungeon Ghyll I'd forgotten that, got well smashed in there after a walk once back in the 80s. It might have been Jennings Sneck Lifter...
Re: Striding Edge is spectacular That looks more like it. Although in this weather I better make sure I've got mountain rescue programmed in to my phone.
Re: Striding Edge is spectacular Who would have thought Derwentw@ter would fall foul of the swear filter. Must be full of tw@ts.
Lord's Rake on Scafell The walk from Scafell Pike summit to Scafell summit via Mickledore, Lord's Rake and the West Wall Traverse is surely the finest walk in the UK, apart from the stroll to the curry house on a Friday night.
The Home of Football museum in Ambleside is always worth a visit if its open. Not sure it's back in Ambleside yet as it went to Manchester last year. There is also a lovely bakery with the nicest homemade cakes I have ever tasted! My cousin has a cottage in Ambleside on Smithy Brow and the shop is just across the road
