I grew up in a house at the bottom of Cemetery Road so the Junction/Measbrough Dyke/Doncaster Rd area was my playground. I don't remember it being as horrible as it is is though. I parked my car in Pindar Oaks Cottages and walked to Oakwell- I often do that. Between the car and Doncaster Road school there must have been half a dozen pools of vomit and countless piles of dog muck, usually in the middle of the pavement. I noticed all this because I wanted to be sure not to step in anything. Depressing stretch of road and I'm sure it's not the only one like it. Some people clearly don't care what kind if environment they live in. I do.
I've started to become a right house snob. I drive past areas and wonder who on earth would live somewhere like that. Saying that, I grew up in Grimethorpe and look back with fond memories.
Have a drive round where you fancy and do it at night and day a couple of times to get a flavour of the place. It won't guarantee how the place is but might help a bit plus you won't know what neighbours are like. Bad ones in 'posh' places and vice versa. There are also some places where folk think they are better than the rest. Comes from a bloke who lived in S36 and now S70.
In between a 7 year stint in Headingley I lived in Darton, Dodworth and Old Town all of which I would recommend. As for your new career have you considered being a court intermediary, assisting witnesses with special requirements to give best evidence? They are appearing in increasing numbers, not least in vulnerable victim sex cases. I would imagine you will have transferable skills given your experience of communicating with young people. Ministry of Justice website may be best first port of call. It's a growth area and well remunerated.
Thanks RedYarmy. I think being a court intermediary may become too emotional at times, it's hard enough hearing about some of the kid's backgrounds in my class without having to confront it every day (even as a helper).
I live in Cookridge, and work in Farsley, so I know the area fairly well. Will PM you some thoughts when I get a chance to look further but I'm sure the prices are not as bad as you suggest.
There are cheaper places and we had an offer on a 200k 2 bed semi bungalow which the owners then dropped out of (luckily for us now in hindsight) but I'm just incredibly picky! I really wanted somewhere that was ready to move straight into as I had no time or energy to consider doing a place up!
Can't say I blame you. I don't do sex anymore and glad not to be cross examining young kids about harrowing abuse. Give me homicide or OCGs any day of the week. Best of luck with it all.
Funny you should say that, I am no longer able to walk in a straight line with my head facing forward when I come and visit my Mum in Hoyland. I have to keep my eyes on the ground and dodge the dog muck. Don't remember it being like that.
I'd echo this. I live in Darton officially (they seem to call all where I live, all 3 on letters etc.) and before that with my parents in Staincross and also there's some nice houses at Wooley Grange. A bit expensive as the likes of Martin Cranie and O'Grady live there but it's close to the train station in Darton and to the motorway as Woodbine said. It's quiet but has a lot of shops and it's had a lot of money put into it lately. As a pointless side note I actually saw Cranie in the co-op the other day buying a galaxy chocolate ripple and 4 beers.
Don't forget Darren Day. He's often seen in the Coop at Darton. It's getting a bit Beverley Hills on Church Street
Can't beat Tingley for "Beverly Hills" sightings. Picked up an Indian last night Ryan Hall and also Martin Atkinson dining. Kammi is a regular too.
I've just moved to a new build in Royston. House price spot on and the missus commutes to Leeds every day and takes bout half hour.
