I love cycling and the tour, but it's not the greatest spectator sport and even for me watching men on bikes leave a starting line isn't that exciting. But it is a piece of history. Best bet for excitement is on a mountain climb (Homle Moss isn't far from Barnsley tomorrow) , or the finish line in Harrogate when you can appreciate how fast these guys go.

Alternatively tune in to the mountains in the Alps when you will get to see some real drama which transcends cycling.

I won't be bothering, I've got so many more important things to do like counting the blades of grass in my garden, watching some paint dry and watching re-runs of some 1976 open university lectures on advanced calculus. Stimulating stuff.

Believe it or not, people say the same about grown men kicking a ball of air about a grass field.

I must admit I don't follow cycling so have no particular interest in the event itself but during the Olympics the race came about 100m next to my house, so I wandered down. On the street, there were lots of happy faces, people having parties in their gardens, kids playing, people writing messages in chalk on the road to encourage the team, people from loads of different countries with their flags wearing all sorts of colourful garb. Just a giant street party really, so if it is similar up in Yorkshire today, I would say it's definitely worth getting out and about.

What is embarrassing? That some people have no interest in cycling?

Owt that brings folk together and communicating with each other has to be a good thing, crowds are a reminder of the Olympic Torch Relay.

It is far far more than a bike race.

Aiming for Sunday, we're not sure whether to catch the train to Penistone then hoof it down to Langsett, where I'd hope there'll be a bit more room to breathe, or get the train to Meadowhall then try to find a spot on or around Jenkin Road, which I think will be the more interesting spot given the climb involved and proximity to the finish - downside being crowd numbers and how much you'll actually be able to see. Decisions decisions.
