I had some good nights in Thurnscoe. Big Jim had the Fairway pub and I was one of the DJ's on the " Sound Syndrome" Disco crew. Had a reputation of being a bit rough round those parts, but I can honestly say everybody was very friendly towards me during my weekly sessions there.
It was very friendly. Girls down there were particularly friendly. When it did kick off tho everybody seemed to think that was the opportunity to join in. So I saw a few fights that turned into all the pub fighting. Although I wasn’t there - there is a story about a bus load of Sunderland (?) fans stopping in Thurnscoe for a drink.
A group of us from the Boys Club had our first pint at the Redbrook up Gawber many years ago, can't remember what it cost. The place was famous at the time for serving under aged drinkers. It was on there Northern Soul night which If I rember rightly the mighty Bub was playing his tunes. Think I was around 15 years old at the time and a good time was had by all, except I remember throwing up on the way home. We also had a click going most nights at the boys club where the oldest looking lad or lass called at the shop just up the road for a couple of bottles of cider. Remember the bed spinning on many occasions as a 14 year old lol.
No I did pubs in and around Doncaster. Sun Inn was a bit scary with all the Stones fans that used to get in there and the Station Hotel at Rossington was always a good night . Waggies Club at Edenthorpe the Fairway in Thurnscoe and the Winning Post in Thorne Moorends were always packed and you were guaranteed a good night hopefully without any trouble. We had some very attractive Disco dancers on the team and they were accompanied by their own " minders", so thankfully any "trouble" was kept to a minimum.
Comrades in goldthorpe on a Sunday lunch session about 1988 bought by me old man first one bought myself was in the Dearne hotel in Bolton Square, landlord didn’t care as we were on there on an under 16’s football presentation do! we started going out up Goldthorpe hotel and green fields when were 16, well you had to be under 18 to get in green fields it seemed.
Would have been Fighting cocks or Pheasant inn . Platts common. ( Mi dad supped int local Wellington inn in jump dare not risk it) 1972 15 yrs old. Bitter 10p lager12p. Couldn't stand bitter. But supped it to be one of the lads so to speak. Lager was classed as a ladies drink. After first couple of weeks stuck to lager and have done ever since. I thought you can call mi what yer want. Tried different bitter beers since. Aaaargh. First time I got drunk and got home. I spewed up in every room int house. Till mi mam came in and shoved mi head darnt bog.
Played football with Malc Bond for a few years. Good goalscorer. He was diabetic and had to inject insulin. Trainer had a Mars Bar handy just in case.
