It must be an age thing, as I'm an old giffer but the best bands (Rock, blues & pop) were from the sixties and an odd few from the 1970s. I was fortunate enough to see this lot live. Beatles Stones Animals Kinks Yardbirds (with Beck & Page) Casey Jones & his Engineers The Pirates Four pennies Searchers Free Chicken Shack Beach Boys Georgie Fame & the Blue Flames John Mayall Bluesbreakers Big Brother & the Holding Company (sadly no Janis Joplin) Unit Four + 2 The Fortunes Hedgehoppers Anonymous ( anybody remember them?) Fairport Convention 10 Years After
You can’t call that music mainstream now which is a shame ,must be 20 years since I listened to radio 1 the music today is *****.
Someone said it’s the Crystals meeting the Undertones.? I thought it was more Ronettes & Buzzcocks, myself.?
Saw a kid in a Saxon t shirt today in Headingley. Would have been about 18-21 with a few other rock kids. I'm more punk than metal, but I do enjoy some of their stuff. They were one of the NWOBHM bands, alongside Iron Maiden & Motorhead I'd put them in there. Missed a bunch of other important bands in that scene. I was never into it at the time, but there is some great music here & there.
There's always been good and bad music throughout rock/pop, and it will continue. It's just that a lot of people latch onto the zeitgeist of the time of their youth. Then maybe with age some like to look down on younger generations. I love, and hate music from all era's.
Idles are good. Khruangbin (totally different) Calexico & Yo La Tengo are making great LPs Loads of upcoming jazz artists from Leeds, like Fergus Quill. Loads of people you haven't heard of, unless you give them a listen.
Went to see tears for fears recently still sound as good as they did in the eighties what a talented duo they were.
Yep seen them a couple of times live. Can’t get how that little lad gets so much power in his voice. Some absolute belters.
They've gone where it's harder to find, but they're still very much around. Just don't expect to discover them when you turn on FM radio or hear them walking out and about anymore. Based on your list, give the following a try; Wunderhorse The Blinders Last Dinner Party The Smile (half of Radiohead) Fontaines DC Sorry The Mysterines Demob Happy The industry's fractured and big labels largely daren't take chances on something that can't be marketed globally to atonal sheep.
That’s my career down the Swanny. Even Reds fans have no time for ‘one of their own’..? Time to write more sad songs..
Khruangbin are incredible, although Glass Beams are similar. Can't work out of they're a rip off of them crossed with Goat, but it's fun either way!
