    He signed Paul Futcher

He also released Ronnie Glavin and sold David Geddis.
    Norman Hunter signed Stuart Gray.

Story I've heard about Geddis is this

Geddis gets called up in front of the chairman/directors.
    "We've sold you to Birmingham"
"Nah, I want to stay here"
    "No sorry, we've sold you"
"Well I'm not going, I'm staying here"
"Yes you are, even if you stay here you'll never play for Barnsley again"
    "So I've got not choice"
    "No"

Remember when we used to just sign players ? A loan player was one or two a season if that ?

    Flipping heck

I wish I could say I don't believe a word of it, mate. But, taking into account the chairman, manager and the local social issues at the time, I do believe it.

Allan Clarke for me, he transformed the club, raised standards and expectations, copying many of the ways of his mentor, Don Revie. We were a bit of a 2nd rate outfit before he arrived, and much of his work laid the foundations for his successor Norman Hunter.

An inspired appointment by Arnold Dennis.

Has to be Richie for me, although I really like the cut of Hill's jib. Although I don't know what a 'jib' is, and I certainly wouldn't know if one was well cut if I saw it

    Dave Bassett

Without a doubt the best after Wilson but Bassett is the most successful manager to be employed by the club and never was afraid to speak his mind.....'anoraks' to all Hill acolytes he's nowt but a bairn compared to Harry

Totally agree but only the first spell...

I remember staff at the club commenting on the difference in his approach to the job and attitude. Between 78 and 81 his style revolved around attention to detail and finding time for anything or anyone. By 1985 he was a dour, alouf individual biding his time before the sack.

The Wembley appearance masks a multitude of sins.

David Tuttle/Keith ****ing Brown for Arjan De Zeeuw being one.

Don't get me wrong had he taken us up those decisions might not have mattered. But he let a top quality defender go for nowt. And replaced him with pure dross. I still maintain we'd have gone up automatic had he kept Arjan.

Plus he almost let Hignett go. Before Dennis stopped it.
