RE: Watch it , half pint !!!! Now there's a sporting hero i could say is my hero! And i have the privilage of saying that i once interviewed the great man for my Social Studies project.
I don't have any general sporting heroes If they didn't play for Barnsley , then they weren't heroes of mine . Here's my hero list :- 1)Ronnie Glavin ; 2)Pat Howard ; 3)Mick Butler ; 4)Gerry Taggart ; 5)Eric Winstanley ; 6)Neil Redfearn .
What about Bobby Doyle I reckon he was second only to Glavin. I cried when I found out the reds had sold him. :'( :'( :'( :'(
Good choice. Love him or hate him the guy was a legend (been suspiciously quiet lately!) Toselands talented enough but the lads as boring as toast. Close second would have to be Schwantz. Sort of bloke you can imagine going for a pint with. Met him on my honeymoon at 2003 WSB round at Laguna and ended up talking about how nice the weather looked at Donington (GP had been on same day)
Bobby Doyle..... Forty grand if my memory serves me right? At that time Peterborough were regarded as a bigger club than us, or maybe that's how a young Barnsleyite like meself saw it? Got to say........... Mick Butler......... in my opinion the original swashbuckler! He even had the tash and locks to go with an apprenticeship for one of the Musketeers!
Always got the impression from Bob Doyle's actions and mannerisms That he was a bit of a maungy git . There was many an occasion when he would start pillocking about like a drama queen ( throwing the ball down on the ground when he didn't get a decision from the referee , for example ) . He had bagfuls of talent that should've been paraded on a higher level . However , something stopped him from doing so . Most of his football was as a 3rd and 4th Division player . When he played for Blackpool against Barnsley in December 1979 , I found it the perfect opportunity to see how he'd developed as a player and a man . Sadly , it appeared to me he'd gone backwards . When he returned on January 1st 1986 with Hull City , he WAS better than anything we'd got in our pathetic midfield . In fact , he scored the fourth goal in their 4-1 win . I always got the impression from him that he saw himself as our equivalent of Johann Neeskens , as their style was somewhat similar . In conclusion , I though he was a talented lad that never made the most of his ability . But hero ? Nah , not for me . I expect my Barnsley heroes to be men , not boys . Just my opinion .
I never use one word When four hundred will do !!! His abilities deserved better than Barnsley , Peterborough , Blackpool & Hull .
