    As a kid I played centre half for my junior teams, he was the one who I looked to emulate on a Sunday morning, no nonsense and not really the greatest footballer but he was a great defender and knew what was what.

    as times passed Paul futcher became a hero, classy as hell, no pace and never made a tackle... He however didn't need to as his reading of the game was superb and he was always in the right position

    Arthur Kaye. Scored some brilliant goals. Took brilliant corners to be nodded in by a not to tall centre forward called Lariat Chappell.

    Glavin. I was 8-11 when he was in his prime. He used to come to my house all the time to see mi Dad and brought us Nike trakkies and trainers. Used to look outta front window and dozens of kids off estate would be waiting outside for autographs which he always obliged.
    Then I invited him to my footy birthday party ont old Oakwell astro pitch and he turned up! Was talk of Mapp Junior School for a while!
    Oh and he was a decent player aswell!

    actually we share similar views

    my first two heroes were ..in no particular order...
    Eric Winstanley and Pat Howard... and I will NOT separate them into first or second for me either. I wish we had a centre back pairing like those too again. They were fantastic. If one did not stop you sure as hell the other one was there to pick up the pieces...fabulous memories of those too players.

    Alan Little he just used to kick everyone. My memories are of home getting sent off every game (though he clearly didn't). Then Ronnie Glavin came along and everyone paled beneath his magnificence.

    For one season O'Connell was quality YT. He played the game exactly how I did. All action, covering every blade of grass every week. For similar reasons I also loved Gwyn Thomas before him.

    Glavin, when I first started watching, couldn't be anyone else's but it watched both Taggart and Hirst for the reserves before most knew them. Taggart I just thought wow! Ball playing defender who just rode over anyone near him. Hirsty was different, pace, power, goal scoring, scandalous what we sold him for.
