I think people went over the top re what he's done due to his illness and that says nice things about human nature that people were so kind.

He definitely must have walked away with more than put in from recent years transfers, and that's the reward for when he was subsidising the club. Sadly for the rest of us we are left watching relegation scraps and a team struggling to score.

Why shouldn't he come away with a bit of a profit?

The bloke has put his own money(and as Theo Paphitis would have said on Dragons Den, "His kids inheritance") over the space of what, 13 years? If he had never bought the club, and instead invested the money(or tied it up in a bank account) then the chances are he would have made a return on said money. Plus, with his health situation, I can't blame him for recouping as much money from the sale as possible to make sure his family have the money after his death. I know I'd do the same...

As i said that's his reward for when he subsidised the club. Anyone who invests hopes to get more back in the long run. That will be exactly same with new owners too.

But for those of us who are fans of the club not investors we have to hope that the club can progress without losing every player that becomes decent just as the club are on the up...

[Potentially defamatory quote by @bfcted removed by site admin]

Why wouldn't any team want to be challenging for the playoffs?

I've been a reds fan since 1978 and for many years every time we got into a decent position and fell away it was "they don't want to go up".

That was blown out of the water when we went into the Prem, and also two years later when we almost returned. Ambition almost killed the club and we had a very uncertain few years to follow.

Whether or not we would have made the play offs, no one knows for sure. Even with all the players we eventually lost, we relied heavily on our 9 away wins, and weren't great at home.

I don't think anyone purposely dismantled the team. We had some good players, and other clubs wanted them and offered them more money than we could dream of paying.

If they were on longer deals we would have got more brass for them, but they still would have gone.

Isn't usually the case in football though is it? We don't actually know that is the case here either!
