My Dad started taking me as I hated going shopping with my Mum and Sister on Saturdays. I loved it straight away and got to see a lot of the country by going to away games, which wouldn't have happened if I'd have continued to be dragged around Wakefield or Leeds shopping all day!
..................most posts relate to a relative, grandfather or father, taking them to the WELL for the first time AND that's why I hate Leeds, Wendy and Blunts - cos that's what happens when a Barnsley bloke takes his lad to see one of the 'big' clubs like Man U or Liverpool play at Leeds or Sheffield..........that young lad is likely then to support Leeds or one of the Sheffield clubs And that's why I wish these 3 clubs would literally go out of business. You might not get much of these deserter supporters near the centre of Barnsley but its very common in the Dearne Valley parts of Barnsley. There are places in the Dearne parts of the Barnsley District that have more Wendy and Leeds stickers in the cars than there are Barnsley stickers
I like that quote Artie! My Dad was born in Sheffield and supported Wednesday (didn't go to many games though). My Mum was born in Wallsend and supports Newcastle. Most of my mates support Huddersfield Town (where i lived, went to school, college etc) I had been to St James Park quite a few times with my Mum and Uncle, who was director of Shepherd Offshores at the time (free tickets etc). Also got dragged to a Sheffield Wednesday game at Hillsborough by my Dad, and to a couple of Huddersfield games (v Liverpool in FA Cup, Birmingham relegation game). I was 12 years old at the time, and was at my mates house (he was Wednesday fan living in Huddersfield). We had just got back in from playing cricket when Barnsley V Ipswich were playing in some sort of playoff final thing on the TV. I was born in Barnsley (Barnsley hospital was slightly closer to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary), so was pretty happy when the ball hit Richard Wright on the back and went in. From that moment onwards I followed Barnsley. I suppose i used Barnsly FC as a vehicle to express my true local identity (where i was born). I checked the scores every week, went to a couple of games a season, bought the replica shirts. However, it wasn't until 2005/6 when i bought my first ever season ticket (18 years old) and went to quite a few away games - (Chestefield, Wednesday, Huddersfield, Walsall, and of course Cardiff for the final). Haven't been able to commit to one since, just a handful of games a season, could only afford to go to Cardiff at home (1st game back in Championship which was rather frustrating after witnessing the previous season). However, after graduating and finding jobs, me and the other half (met her at Uni and converted her into a red, she used to follow her hometown club Rushden and Diamonds, so it wasn't exactly hard!) have some disposable income for once, and will be season ticket holders next season. +2, every little helps!
Ido so I can come on here and slag them off...in order to.. piss folk off on here , AND its so chuffing easy too.
I'm beginning to wonder why Having read some of the immature ill informed toss about what an evil person John Stones was for having the temerity to be sold by the club to Everton I'm wondering if I really have that much in common with some fellow supporters.
Because I've lived in Barnsley since I was 3. My dad never took me as a young un, but when I developed an interest in watching footy aged 10, I went on Ceefax to find out which division my local team were in as it seemed the logical thing to do. Attaching myself to a big division 1 club never real entered my thought process. From there I rang the club to find out how much it cost to get in (think it was £2.50 in to the Ponty at the time) and asked my mum if I could go. The rest is history. Tha noz.
All that proves is that Wednesday and Leeds fans have a higher propensity to buy and display car stickers, because they are mongs. I mean, car stickers. Tha what?
Dad took me when I was 5 - August 1967 - Barnsley 2 Barrow 3 .... been going since then. Remember I used to cry cos he wouldn't take me to the midweek games cos I had to go to bed at half 7 cos it was school in the morning!
