    Wing backs' key role...

in 3-5-2. The two wide players have to be hand-picked for the job. This was the end of Owen Archdeacon. I remember watching him at West Ham in a 4-2 thumping really not knowing where he was supposed to be, sort of shuffling between looking uncomfortable any farther back than just inside our half and not feeling confident enough to get forwards either. Not so Nicky Eaden and Neil Thompson, both of whom were made for the role and got forward to score some key goals as well.

I would always go for wing-backs, as it gives such a flexible formation and really totally confuses teams who go for man-for-man marking because you can throw any one of the three defenders, or five midfielders forward whenever and this is especially important against resolute defences when you just can't find a way through.

I don't think, however, that we should 'change horses midstream' this season. Wilson's formation was really 5-3-2, rather than 3-5-2. Devaney can play on either wing, but prefers the left, or as a striker, hence the ten goals last season for Cheltenham. Try as I may, I can't see Shuker as a wing back, but take your point about playing 'in the hole.' Trouble is, if we change the system now, we'll end up with phrases like 'takes time to gel' for another season. Do you really want that?

Hassell, however, would be an excellent sweeper, given his performances last season when forced into central defence. He reads the game as well as any of our defenders and times his tackles well. You never know!!
