Nope. But Hassell and Eaden are the best right backs I've seen for us, both had lots of qualities, pace wasn't one of em. Darren Barnard and Neil Thompson amazing left backs. No pace. I think Bree is going to be some player. I'll eat my hat if he isn't a Premier League player before he's 21.
I've no idea what you're on about regarding Ramage & Cranie. Ramage improved the back 4 when he joined on loan, we stopped conceding as many goals, the only problem was we stopped scoring as many too but defensively he was an improvement on what we'd previously had. Since when has Cranie ever been our worst defender? 2 years ago we had Wiseman, Kennedy & McNulty employed by the club. If you think any of them were better than Cranie then your eyesights as bad as Stevie Wonder.
I don't mind Bree, but people saying he's a superstar, not for me yet. For me he's not half the player Stones was when he came through. After 2 games I said Stones will play for and captain England, Bree although a tad younger looks way behind Stones in every department!
He is half the player of Stones but he's still good enough to have a PL future. He'll definitely play at a higher standard than us IMO. And he is only a tad younger but it's a massive year. At same age Stones was the last youngster to be offered a contract that summer.
Bree has pace, a lot of it, not cole pace but he's one of the faster players in the team. The lads 17 ffs, who are you expecting? Cafu?
He was still 16 a couple of weeks ago mate, give him a chance? As he's still got 4 or 5 years of growing to do, there is every chance he'll get stronger and quicker. I think it's almost certain he'll get a lot better with experience, He's already our our best full back in the squad.
There's no point comparing him to Stones, Stones is a once a generation talent. For a 17 year old lad he's doing as good as anyone can realistically expect. He just needs to keep doing what he's doing which is doing the basics well & the more confidence & experience he gets the better he'll get. I don't think he's been brilliant or anything but he's been ok which is a lot better than Brown. And ok when you're an inexperienced 17 year old is spot on
Whilst I agree they are both out of position, they are both professional footballers, doing a job that many of us can only dream of. Standing still, whilst players with the ball pass them by is inexcusable. I saw Nyatanga on 2 or 3 occasions, just not bother with a ball that was 60-40 in his favour. If he can't be @rsed, just drop him. He just looked slow, (almost asleep). I thought Brown did OK at Crewe, and I though Dudgeon was ok until he went AWOL in one of the games - Swindon or MK, I can't remember, it's all an embarrassing blur. They are still pro footballers who should give their all in whatever position they're selected in. I praised Nyatanga to the hilt after Crewe, but I'm still seething at his ineptitude last night.
I remember Andy Rammell coming back after one pre-season like fooking lightening, give the lad a chance
James Bree will be a top player in my opinion, I started a thread on him last night stating that I think he needs a break from the spotlight, it's blanantly obvious that teams are targeting our full backs as that's where we seen to concede a lot of goals. If he's not going to start with Dudgeon then get another left back.....sharpish!!! As for right back I think we've maybe a player in the squad that could probably do a job. Sort our full back situation out and I think we will see a big difference in results.
The second half of his loan spell Ramage was brilliant but when he first came he was dropping ******** left right and centre. Cranie was our worst centre half then, not our worst defender and he was *****
Totally agree and to be fair the lad is still 16 NOT 17, and still in his first year as a scholar. John Stones (great player) was at the end of his second year when he made his debut, and almost two years older when he became a first team regular. James Bree just needs time, and a bit of patience, to show his full potential, that a lot of people think he has.
Only just seen this thread and there are some strange comments on it. Those writing off a school kid after a handful of appearances need to take a look at themselves. He was 16 at the start of the season - he is still growing and will get faster and stronger, and hopefully learn positional sense My only concern is he hasnt any decent defenders alongside to learn from Probably too young to start every game but he is already better than the rest of our full backs Will he progress as well as Stones - who knows - he could be another Stones or he could become the next RNL -only time will tell - Chances are he will be somewhere in between We are a funny lot though - I remember Mick McCarthy getting a lot of stick when he first started playing for us and people saying he would never make a footballer And as for the lack of pace argument - Pace helps poor defenders get out of trouble good defenders dont need too much of it - though its always nice to have Best defender I ever remember was a player called Bobby Moore - he had no pace at all but seemed to do OK The one that gets me is how Cranie keeps getting picked - Id rather start MVoto
Yes, exactly, pace is nice to have!! Comparing a player to Bobby Moore, Nicky Eden, Mick McCarthy etc is all very well, but the modern game is different, as many teams have wingers with pace now. Don't get me wrong, I hope Bree blossoms into a great player. But at the moment lots of people are asking for him to be rested.
