Re: Thank you People hear what they want to hear. There was a link on here to an article the other day in which Hill said we will be more than competitive at this level and the board said we can compete with championship wages.
Re: Thank you Can you re-post that? It is typical Hill to say one thing one week and the complete opposite the next.
Sorry mate, I'm on my phone and its useless at finding old posts but there was definitely a thread and link to the article The media choose how they want to report things and the questions they ask. Whenever you listen to the full interview Hill always qualifies his comments with we will be successful but this often gets edited or not picked up on. You know I think there are huge structural problems at the club and big improvements need to be made, but as far as i can see much ofvthe negativity is coming from a section of fans selectively picking odd quotes and misrepresenting facts. Or worse still using rumours of possible signings to doom monger. And thays starting to rub of on those that are rational. Self fulfilling prophecy. Proper. Doing. My. Head. In. If the club did start saying we are going to get promoted the same people would criticise that. Just as they wanted Robins sacked, and Davey sacked.
Marquee signings Remember that? Not so long ago many on here were criticising the club for promoting visions that were not going to be achieved. So now they tell it how it is and people still moan. I personally do not need to be coaxed by spin. I understand the current predicament and believe that the prudent approach is the correct one. We are being prudent and it will in turn benefit us -there is NO short term fix. I am still happy to support my club as I have done for over 50 years. So stop whingeing and get behind em. Youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu Redssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
Re: Marquee signings I think what actually happened was that Cryne talking out "Box Office Signings" and then we did not sign any...
Re: Marquee signings Thats the point though isn't it, we won't be signing box office players so the club can't say that we will. What we will hopefully do is what we did last year, build a more than competitive team like we did last pre-season and hope that this year it doesn't get ripped apart in January
Re: Marquee signings No, the poster I was replying to sais that when that when the club said they would make "Marquee" signings they were laughed it when IIRC the case was that we didn't actually sign anyone of note but presumambly we could have done so as at teh time Cryne's backing was in full swing.
Re: Marquee signings Yeah that's a very fair point, although I got the feeling at the time there was a fair bit if bluffing behind those claims and it raised expectations which ultimately made Davey's job impossible. (Not saying Davey was the right man but I think the boards bravado hampered him).
Re: Marquee signings The point for me is that unless anyone on here has been in denial or in another world for the last 12 months, we all KNOW that there won't be any box office signings. I think most people accept that. I applaud the club for doing its best to live within its means. So what I expect the club to do, after all it is trying to secure my custom again... is to give me a reason to be hopeful. Tell me that you're going to find the next Vaz Te, you're going to replace Butterfield with new talent or an established midfielder, tell me that this squad will be built on team spirit, which as Reading showed last year, counts for alot. Tell me that the lower leagues are full of untapped talent, just waiting to make names for themselves in the Championship.Tell me you have confidence in the players that are at the club. Tell me Jim O Brien has re-signed. Tell me that there is a plan. Alternatively, just keep reminding me how tough it's going to be, tell me we'll be lucky to stay up. I don't expect the club to lie, I do expect it to make an effort to enthuse people. I expect it to have a plan, and an ambition, even if it can only be built on team spirit and bargain players.. Not the resignation that this is as good as it gets. I've renewed. I did it out of habit. That's not a sound basis for a business. They need to make more of an effort, and quick. That's not me being sensitive or needing my ego to be stroked. That's me thinking that the club that has been part of my life for the last 32 years, is losing me.
Re: Marquee signings All very valid points Fired, and I agree that is what the club should say. I suppose my issue is that I'm not sure how often of late the club or Hill have been negative. I read a lot of posts referencing old interviews like McNulty's, and people taking single quotes when Hill has responded to a direct question about the disparity in budgets. He can only answer those honestly. But whenever I read or hear a full interview, in context, the message I always get isn't a million miles away from what you've put. My main issue is that the board have to give Hill a budget for the season and not change the goal posts in January and force him to sell someone when there's no time or money to replace them. If they don't do that we're very capable of outperforming this year
