but

as long as we are in this league we probably wont have a team that can compete easily in the championship. Promotion though brings the possibility of singing new better players. What the hell is the point of the season if we arent trying to get promoted. If we dont go up some of our better players might leave then where would we be?

    RE: but

IMHO and possibly in Neutrino's as well, we don't have enough players who would be good enough, therefore we would need to bring in more, new, better players and on past experience, it's unlikely that Mr. Shepherd would agree to fund all that, so we would have a season of dire defeats followed by relegation. Which do you think would be worse?

If he won't get the required players if we went up

Why would he get them if we stayed down?

    you cant know

for sure what will happen if we get promoted. I agree it would be a tough season. But who knows we might just survive, i for one think its worth getting promoted and risking in that. All you need is 3 teams to be worse than us and that is possible. If people arent wanting us to do well and win promotion whats the point in going to the games? be better for us to loose a few would it? dont want to risk being in play offs in case we win them? Im sure everyone at sheff wed is thinking, "god i wish we were still in league one"

Automatic promotion if we had a little bit bigger squad

Two experienced (early to middle thirties) centre halves
    Two forwards
Any of these on loan would be great
All the rest of the team and squad is in place

Best defence in the division Nudger

Why spoil that by bringing in two has been centre halves?

Because it wouldn't be so expensive to make what we have better to be able to win the league outright next season and with another winning season behind us, there may be more in the pot for further improvements the following season.

I understand what you're saying just as much as I understand Neutrino's argument. No I wouldn't want them to start losing games and of course I would be happy if they gained promotion. However, if they came back down, it would be much harder to swallow than staying down for one more season and then making a concerted push for promotion.
What I would really like is for the club management to realise that whilst staying in the black is desirable, it is very rarely achievable on a regular basis and that if that is what we are striving for, it is unlikely that it will be achieved in the lower divisions. Spending now on the kind of players that would not only achieve promotion but would keep us in League 1 next season would be more easily payed back if we were in a higher standard of football with a winning team and the increased revenues that would go with it.

    That doesn't add up

To suggest the board wouldn't sanction the signings of the required players if we went up, when income would undoubtedly be much higher, but they would if we stayed down with a much reduced income doesn't make any sense at all to me.

In my opinion if we didn't win promotion we would be far less likely to keep our good players, far less likely to sign better players and have far fewer funds at our disposal for any transfer activities.

Let's be honest, this is a **** league. It's hard to feel any passion or optimism in this league. The game on Tuesday night proved this, the atmosphere was like a reserve game.

Even when we were relegated in 2001/2002, we still got regular 5 figure attendances and there was more of an atmosphere.

Some of our players it feels are only here to catch the eye of bigger clubs (McPhail for one, Nardiello to a certqain extent). If we went up, I feel these players will have a renewed purpose to show what they can do.

And on a smaller matter, we'll be on sky more often and we wouldn't have to wait as long to see our goals on Sky Sports News!

We have a fair chance of promotion

In a good run of form (not lost for how many games?), winning matches that we would have probably lost in the past couple of seasons, good young squad with adequate cover in most positions.

There is more than half the season to go and we sit well placed in the top six. Admittedly a host of chasing clubs are only few points behind, but whilever we keep on winning (or not losing), it won't be easy for them to close the gap.

Lots to be positive about and if the January transfer window is utilised well, then it could just give us that little bit extra to strike out for an automatic place.

As for next season in the Championship, let's hope the club's plans have that scenario in mind and that the players to keep/buy have already been identified. No reason why we couldn't survive there. Stay positive, we need to have some belief that it can happen.

I have no intention of qualifying my blind optimism.

    Don't you think...

... Andy Ritchie has got enough on his plate trying to win promotion, without having to speculate what he needs to do next season - IF we manage to go up !

P.S Yes, I do think we will go up - swapping places with the Fowls (nodding2fingers)

    mmmm

    Personally,

Think we will lose in play off semis.

Hope I am wrong though, lets face it. Mondays got through and promoted whilst they were playing complete tosh too. So we all should have massive hope on this

How can you predict that we will lose in the playoff semis? Lack of optimism their.

    No I don't

I would hope he has some semblance of a plan for next year, whatever the outcome.

    RE: mmmm

well go and question every bugger elses answer then... everyone has their oppinion, I was always one to overpredict with too much optimism, but that has changed this year for the first time ever.

we all have opinions, and contrary to stats, saying we have the best defence in the league, sorry its the luckiest, just every side we have played just haven't killed us off. Remember Preston earlier in the cup, must have had 100 chances but could they bugger kill us off.

We are lucky more like. I Feel we have enough midfield wise, strikers are just being unlucky I think (but possibly crap), but defence wise, I don't have the confidence.

You have your opinions, I have mine, and so does everyone else
