Following the women’s European triumph, we have one of the best academies in the country. Barnsley born footballers have graced the game and I’m sure the women of the town can do it also. So what’s our position on opening the doors to girls?
I thought there was a Barnsley ladies team. Also there was talk of driftwood building a new stadium for them too.
There is, was supposed to play Sheffield ladies on the open day but they failed to show! Running scared I assume
There are various grassroots women and girls teams around the Borough, of which Barnsley FC Ladies are one. They are not though an academy, nor are they part of BFC's official structure. This article on the club's website explains the nature of the partnership, though it's a bit of an exagerration to say it 'secures the use of Oakwell's facilities' as only the open age first team are allowed to play there. The junior teams all play at Carlton Park. BFC could certainly do a lot more to support the development of women's football if they wished to.
https://shekicks.net/fawnl-over-1500-see-newcastle-united-women-win-again/ Barnsley beat Leeds 2-0 with an attendance of 330. Not sure what they got before this season but I guess that's a bit of an increase since England won the Euros.
