If you look at the final piece in "Lifting the Cup" I found a letter in the Barnsley Independent about the sale of the Cup Winning side.
    It goes something like
"We have paid for Strawberries and cream and been served Gooseberries and sour milk. ...... I will never go to Oakwell again"

    Just looking at that list.

I'm not sure that Lillycrops fee was a record as I think someone had gone for £1500 some time before.

Certainly missing from that list is Frank Barson who moved to Villa in 1919 for £2850. This was a British and World record at the time.

We also hold the record for £500 I believe when we sold Benny Green in 1904. That did cause a lot of trouble such was the uproar that season ticket holders and shareholders demanding an explaination that a meeting was called at the Clarence Hotel The manager said that the £4 a week wage was more than the other 24 players at Oakwell were on combined and the club couldn't stand in his way.The supporters were in no mood for expainations and the the directors and management had to suffer a torrent of abuse from the packed hotel. Benny Green scored the first ever goal for Birmingham at saint Andrews and was given a piano. Benny was from Penistone and was killed in action in 1917 aged 34. RIP

I have never understood the 'Tommy Taylor - first £30k footballer' tag, as I reckon that Jackie Sewell was transferred for £34k in March 1951 from Notts County to Sheffield Wednesday. I think the Taylor fee was just to remove the burden of £30k from such a young player. It was never a record for the league.

    Your spot on there.

Up to around 1905 the Football League set a cap on transfer fees of £500. Certainly Alf West's move to Liverpool was also at the maximum fee.
