Whats your worst away day - ie what ground did you find the most intimidating, away pub choice, atmosphere. I would go with Grimsby - always felt very intimidating walking through the rough streets near the ground - same goes to luton
Portsmouth away in play off season. A day wasted. Got up early, went on official coaches, got stuck in traffic. Kick off delayed. Got in just as match kicked off. Steve Claridge got a hat-trick (final result 3 nil to them), back on the coach, got home late at night. Like I say, a day wasted.
Agree with Grimsby - old Hull ground was vile and cops at Roker park were b'stards. Leicester at Filbert Street was always lively afterwards and Maine Road - carnage.
Went to Birmingham City few years ago and parked in a back street not far from the ground. As we got out of the car this young black lad , about 11/12 years old , came across to us and said " look after your car mister while you are at the match ". I said look can you see that Rotweiler on the back seat, he'll look after the car for us. His reply " does it know how to put out fires"
Once went to West Ham with a mate who supported Southampton back when Keegan played for them (early 80s) most intimidating atmosphere I've ever experienced, really nasty. I heard similar reports about when we beat them in 5-2 the League Cup mid 80s.
I used to like Filbert Street. It was like you were going through someone's front door to get in to the ground. Whole place was completely surrounded by houses, it was weird. And then there was that cup game when Machin had just taken over. Third round of the cup when that was the biggest football weekend of the year. Filbert Street was packed and we won 2-1. Brilliant game, amazing atmosphere, one of my favourite ever away games. I'll always look back on the place fondly because of that.
Crystal palace. Not renowned for being intimidating or for bovver however, it's horrific to get to and from. Grimsby due to their hatred of all things Yorkshire. Port vale for their wanting to destroy all thins not from burslem. Proper **** holes as well.
Prenton Park was a shithole. I saw us get tonked for 6 there as a youngster, think Aldridge got a hat-trick. But was there when Rankin got a late winner a few years later, which I think saw Aldridge sacked as manager. Karma. I only went to Filbert Street once, we got relegated from the Premier League... enough said. But St. Andrews in the playoffs was harsh. It was one of the best results I've witnessed, but our coach getting bricked afterwards wasn't as fun.
Boundary Park is a great away ground. Old school ground, decent fans and nice easy scenic journey over the pennines through Holmfirth.
Haven't been for some years but that's not how I remembered it. It's a dump, and it was always freezing or blowing a gale (or both). Plus it was a basterd to get to, but perhaps that's the fault of the driver.
Piss easy to get to. Just off M62 or go through Holmfirth and onto by-pass. Took us less than an hour every time I've been.
Grimsby for me too as it was always freezing on that terrace, even if it was sunny there was that nasty icy wind.
for me most intimadating was West Ham early 90s we lost 5-0 or 5-1.Tim breaker there right back scored twice, and you had to go to bog with west ham fans, the cops let us in 5 at a time. and definatley Plymouth in early 90s too, it was a boxing day game, there was about 2 coach loads if that or reds fans, it peed it down all game, the stewards offered us a place undercover, then were trying to get a fiver off everyone. so we stood out side, cold and wet and we lost 1-0 too.wet through for the next 7-8 hours on the coach back
