norwich??? remember being in their end in fa cup when they got a penalty...supporters round us apologised saying was never a pen! boro 84 away, 4 stabbed...
Jepp It went crazy. We invaded one highrise where we thought it was coming from. Totally nutters when i think about it.
Norwich I've always found to be really offensive, even the kids swear at you! Been there countless times, never seen us win. They got particularly arsey after we scored twice in the last ten to equalise under Bassett, "**** orf back to yarrkshire you twaaaats!" was what one ten year old saw fit to inform us.
Enfield I went with The Rising Sun lot. They didn't want it when 10 coach loads of pissed up Barnsley lads turned up behind their home end. We only wanted to find the away end entrance, but then there's always some willy bugger that kicks it off. It's always crazy no matter where in London a match is played. F'in murder!
Thought it was 1981. I was in with the Enfield supporters at Oakwell, my Dad sneaked us in for free somehow. Stood on the cinders of the Spion Kop, never had any trouble, never even thought it might be unsafe to be there either.
Boro away Mi mum and dad, mi mate, mi bro and me went to Boro earlier than 84 for a cup match. Got ambushed by 40 youths. Resulted in my bro with a broken hand, me with a black eye, three windows in the car put through and 8-9 badly hurt Boro fans after mi dad went potty with the jack. Mi mate jumped into the car (the wimp).
RE: Chelsea in 1981 Remember it well. I must have been on the same bus from the Coach n Horses on Sheffield Road? Great win though and lived to tell the tale. T'was a tad worrying at the time though???!!!
Yep, went all over wi Coach n Horses them days Skinny 15 year old in them days, not much use versus 100 angry Cockneys!
RE: Yep, went all over wi Coach n Horses them days Yep I was a skinny 17 yr old beginning to enjoy the delights of too much beer! I managed to get inside the turnstyle and avoid a kicking. My mate wasn't so fortunate though!! Chelsea fans were coming into our section of terracing all game with battling constantly breaking out. A character building experience if ever there was!!
RE: Simon Baldry... He did. He now plays for Ossett Town and coaches the kids at Penistone Junior school.
Hillsborough/Bramall Lane in footballing terms, the most demoralised I've felt leaving an away ground has to be Hillsborough for Spackmans last game in charge. Took the lead with a 30 yard bullet from Gallen, then proceeded to play the worst 75 minutes of football, highlighted by a plump Darren Barnard at toiling left back. Their fans know how to rub it in and all. Closest I've come to quitting football altogether. For violence, no away match I've ever been to has come close to the scenes outside Bramall Lane in the promotion season. 6,000 fans crammed into 4,000 seats, Hendrie doing the business and going top for Xmas. Left the ground 15 minutes after final whistle, big mistake. Running battles all up London Road and down the dual carriageway leading to the station. Saw two lads get run over by police horses, the coppers were waving the batons like mad, got a crack, gave some out an all as it happens, remember getting to the station just about in once piece, having to turn back cos it was going off on the platforms with another teams special train. Oh, I do hope the return match this season turns out to be like a trip through memory lane...
I ended up on crutches after that game Largely down to the crush & twisting my knee. Missed an important uni hockey match that week & had my only ever argument with my roommate at uni who said that instead of going to the replay, I should be in Newcastle cheering the hockey team on. Feeling guilty (and still on crutches) I got a train to Barnsley, watched the match; got up early borrowed my mum's car & drove to Newcastle to watch the hockey....only to find out they couldn't get me on the minibus once I dropped the car back off in Barnsley. Ended up having to catch the train (alone) crutches & all - cost me a fortune.
Went to both them games I was driving to Chelsea and was a bit lost, so I gave a lift to a Chelsea fan who warned me that there would be trouble. He said to go in the Shed, stand near a copper and keep my mouth shut. I saw the Chelsea fans flooding into the Reds fans at the far end and was glad I had taken his advice. I was also in the wrong bit at White Hart Lane and just kept quiet.
Our own fans at Leicester when we got relegated from Prem We asked some lads in front to sit down & were then subjected to 45 mins of abuse. Half way thru my mum & sisters moved, but I stayed put, refusing to let them have the satisfaction. Was called all names under the sun, was jostled about, was given the usual "you're not a real fan / jumped on the bandwaggon" story, and still refused to go. After the end of the game one of them pushed me as we were leaving. I was fuming, and obviously upset ayt being relegated. One of the only occasions I've cried coming away from a game.
Watching Barnsley lose 3-1 At Marine, FA Cup 1st Round November 1975. The shame and humiliation as we walked away from the ground was an experience I never want to endure again.
