Mike Pollitt is the worst signing by a long way because it was done out of pure malice and giving a job to his mate at the expense of the team. Watters is the worst loan to permanent signings In terms of who turned out to be the worst ever on a financial cost to reward it probably has to be Oulare but without knowing the figures there's probably a dozen or so that are up there.
I think worst signing should be different to worst player. Gridelet, Oulare and Mido are probably the 3 worst because we got absolutely nothing in return for what we paid in fees and salaries.
I can’t go with just one. I’m going with a trio. All signed the same summer. Oulare, Iseka and Benson were on big money in BFC terms. Just those three signings alone - in terms of expense and lack of output - are a huge reason we are currently a mid table third division outfit about to start a new season with an average French centre half at full back. I’m not defending the current hierarchy. And yes, it’s been a few years now. But that little spell of transfer activity ‘allegedly’ undertaken by a fella now in a jail cell should never be downplayed. Oulare the worst, if I have to name just one.
Oulare for bigger waste of a transfer fee. Cosgrove for biggest waste of wages. Most of these bad buys get found out quite quickly and get binned off, for some reason we gave Cosgrove a career.
There are two that stick out for me, although pound for pound Oulare is hard to beat. Mike Flynn - Single worst centre half I’ve ever seen us have and we’ve had a good few bad ones. Built like an oil tanker and moved slower than one. It’s said the first yard is in your head, all he had between his ears was candy floss and hate. Tom ‘quarterback’ Kennedy - I don’t remember a player I hated more. Absolutely no talent, application, effort or ability. More bothered about being the housewives favourite than passing the ball to a red shirt.
I wonder if the Belgian signings will form part of the evidence against Conman? Fraud in respect of certain transfers seems to be the charge, and he appears to have moved Barnsley money to another part of his empire.
I'd doubt this sadly. I've followed the Oostende thing and, much as in this country, the inner machinations of a company are not truly laid bare until they go into liquidation. The Liquidator looks at things with an eye on assessing Director conduct, being legally able to call in all the company paperwork deemed necessary. He has been in a cell (and now has an angle tag - no that's not a mis-spelling - he can't lie straight in bed) largely as I see because the Liquidator in Belgium has found stuff, plus quelle surpreeze, he hasn't co-operated with the Liquidator, something that could land you in prison here too. FWIW I think Watters is a decent squad player at this level if fully fit. Oulare and the other Belgium are the worst signings. They were possibly a factor in the other Directors ousting Conway (some good tehy have done for us), so in one sense they served a greater purpose, but fees/wages v results they have to be up there at the top.
Watters has been a poor signing, but he probably wouldn’t even make it into the top 10 of our worst. The worst has to be Oulare. I can’t think of another player who contributed so little despite such a significant financial outlay. When he signed, we were a club pushing for promotion to the Premier League, yet by the time he left, we were playing in the division below.
Pollitt, if I'm not mistaken was Flickers brother-in-law Fola Onibuje O'Neil Thompson would be my choices But if we are going money spent re input Mike Sheron, for what we reportedly paid surely is up there.
Watters not even in the top 20. Oulare, Mido, Frimpong, Fumaca, Alex Kiwomya Jeronimo, Michael Smith, Richard Naylor, Fola Onibuje. The blatant lack of effort and sulking by Deon Burton. Richard Kell, John Oster was awful - only made up for it by scoring the goal for Grimsby v Wolves, which helped us to promotion. I could go on ….
