If you have read his autobiography you'll realise that his comedy has all been based on incidents that have happened to him or embellished experiences he has had. He's run out now and is now so far above the ordinary life that he's unlikely ever to get inspiration from it again.

    Frankie Boyle? Genius? No...

He's brilliant on Mock the Week - where most of the gags are pre-written before the show (yes, they are).

Have you ever seen him live? Absolutely dreadful. He's spitting out the same jokes that he was 2/3 years ago. I saw him in Bradford a few weeks back and people were walking out in disgust. Fans of him are fast starting to turn against him, because of his sheer lack of new material. He was on stage for 1 hour bang on, and just didn't look interested in the performance. There was no back stage meeting after or anything like that. I felt very, very cheated. The majority of his jokes are either pre written with the gist of the show i.e. Mock the Week in mind or just mildly funny gags. If he's ever a guest on a show i.e the Charlotte Church show then watch him - he offers very little to the cause. He's not good by any means. Compare him to the likes of Jimmy Carr and he doesn't even come close to being a good stand up comedian. Some of his writings are brilliant, but he very rarely, if ever, offers anything spontaneously.

I went to see Jimmy Carr last November, and he was excellent. He was on stage for around 2 hours - there was plenty of new gags in there and he stayed around for an hour or so after the gig to sign picture, talk to fans, and even throw in a few more jokes.

Boyle is a disgrace to the comedy world.

Have to agree on lots of that.

He does seem to work much of his routine into Mock the Week, which is why I felt so robbed when I saw him live. If you've seen MtW, you've seen his latest show.

Still funny, but he will get found out unless he gets some new material. Omid Djalili is the same. Same routine and jokes for years now.

All down to taste I suppose

cos I dont find Jimmy Carr even mildy amusing. dont think you can analyse comedy like you've tried to, either you find it funny or you dont. I've watched pretty much ever MtW 30 odd times, and I still find myself laughing at Frankie and fast forwarding most others. the two Live at Apollo shows he's done imho are head and shoulders above anyone else who's been on, again, just my kind of humour.

    Each to their own.

I find it deeply un-amusing when I pay £36 for tickets to see a show with jokes I've heard years before (maybe 5 jokes were new...). A show where the man in question just looks like he wants to get off the stage and where there is no fan to entertainer banter whatsoever. He was asking people what they did for a living, and coming back with nothing remotely funny. Seriously, up until seeing him live, I thought he was brilliant - but now, I think he's overrated. Jimmy Carr on the other hand is a consumate professional. He loves his work, he loves meeting the fans and his work is brilliant.

Put Boyle out of his comfort zone, and he simply falls apart.

But again, each to their own.

I'll be sure to keep other comedians I like off the board.

Daniel Kitson & Stewart Lee. You won't have heard their stuff on panel shows because they simply don't do them.

Of the 'panel' stand-ups, Dara O'Briain and Bill Bailey are head and shoulders above the rest.

That said, Marcus Brigstocke is brilliant live. Just never seen him on panel shows, so I don't count him in that ilk.

Jimmy Carr...good stand up comedian? Can't agree with that at all. Just reels off (unfunny) one-liners...not what I'd call good stand-up

I also happen to think Frankie Boyle is very funny, he's always the funniest on mock the week, and I watched his live at the apollo performance earlier and it had me in stitches!

Different strokes though and all that

Come to think of it, that would be quite funny.

Do they have live DVDs out?

Daniel Kitson was from Phoenix nights, right? I've heard his live shows are meant to be sheer class, but I don't think I've ever heard/seen him do anything besides Phoenix Nights.

Stewart Lee I'm sure I'm familiar with, but I'm not sure where from.

But you're right, Bill Bailey when I saw him live last year was possibly the funniest thing I've ever seen, I was genuinely in pain from laughing so much. Can't wait to see his DVD
