I agree with you on this point; I wasn't trying to support the gun lobby in my post. Anybody who owns a gun should only do so for specific reasons, under strict licence and should have to keep their guns in an armoury when not being used.

Quite funny (In a way) you mentioned Britain First. I have a coulpe of American friends and family that post things that Britain First publish. I tell them about their racist thoughts and it doesn't bother them. Saw one post with 2 young Asians coming out from a well known Hotel and another picture with a white man begging on the streets. It said something like how can the immigrants get 5 star hotels handed out from the Government when veterans can't get any benefits. Because it said veteran they thought it was America, obviously British don't call ex service members veterans, do they? I put them straight, but they aren't very smart over here. I don't mean all people, it must be the people I know :)

if they didn't have over 1.6m facebook followers, i'd find them incredibly funny. they literally just make racist $hit up and people believe it.

How do you know that your emotions will be kept under control all your life.?
Most of the mass killings reported are people of previous good repute , something just clicked ,a domestic dispute etc and just carried on. The Cumbria killings for instance if he hadn't had access to a gun the majority of his victims would be alive today .

Not just that but legal gun ownership just causes unnecessary escalation. For example, if someone wants to rob a house over here, they know it's very unlikely the homeowner will have a gun. In America however, they know that there is a good chance the homeowner will have a gun meaning the robber is more likely to arm himself, thereby increasing the chance someone ends up dead.

That's exactly right and is the argument given by the NRA in USA .
If the good guys had a gun the bad guys couldn't carry on
Well that's not worked in open carry Texas has it?
Also I think before this incident the suspect was very much thought on as a good guy .
It's the usual thing though of who has the best influence in the media will get the best coverage.
The NRA spends millions advertising on the news channels etc

No system is perfect, i'm not saying it is but guns will never be taken out of circulation completely. My point was that to ensure maximum protection and try to make sure that reactionary killings are very difficult because of the strict controls that are in place.

Yes but why would that excuse or explain owning a weapon designed to kill?

because people can legally own guns and not kill people just like people own knifes

by the way im not condoning shooting people im just saying anyone can own something legaly then go and kill someone with that object which then is a deadly weapon

But there is a difference between owning something which is designed for the purpose of killing and owning something which is designed for other purposes.

If I take a gun and shoot somebody dead I have done exactly what the gun was designed for, exactly what it was made for and sadly exactly what it was sold for.

If I take a carving knife (horror movie style) and stab somebody to death with it then I have used it for a purpose it wasn't designed made or sold for. It was designed, made and sold to carve up my dinner.

You see the difference? Kill with a gun is using it. Kill with a carving knife is MISusing it.

If we are to say that guns are fine to own because you can misuse other objects and you might as well start considering a pillow a deadly weapon because you can kill somebody with one

That's being a bit deliberately obtuse isn't it?

The purpose of guns is to kill. I might use some bacon as a draft excluder doesn't make it a draft excluder.

**** that. The American mentality is buy a bazooka and blow the whole target up.

I am really sorry to say, with an American sister in law, that America is a major problem in the hate that we have in the world today. Yet they see themselves as the salvation of the world. Much like the Christians did during the crusades.

They want to govern and police the world yet their country is so scarily messed up that they have no right to preach to anyone.

If I use a gun, a knife or my hands to kill my prey is there a difference?

The assault rifles used in the American atrocities are certainly designed to kill people but the majority of guns licenced in this country are designed for hunting and/or target shooting and are strictly controlled. Any other use is misuse.
On the subject of misuse if you really want to kill indiscriminately a car will do a better job, and often does. Carry a gun, a knife with a fixed or lockable blade of just 2.5" or even a baseball bat in your car without a good reason and you can be arrested for carrying an offensive weapon in a public place.
So, in this country guns, knives, baseball bats, even cars are perfectly fine to own unless you misuse them. There is no difference.
I'm not suggesting the American approach to weapons is in any way defensible but neither do I think that gun ownership UK style is wrong, as seems to be the tone of some of the arguments on here.
